MTS Centre ranks among 20 busiest in world

Quote:
The MTS Centre keeps packing them in, according to Pollstar Magazine, which says the Phone Booth is now the 19th busiest building in the world.
Through the first nine months of this year, the MTS Centre has sold 270,095 tickets. These ticket sales include only non-sporting events and do not include hockey games.
The arena now sits 11th among facilities in North America, its highest ranking ever, and it remains in third spot in Canada, after the Bell Centre in Montreal (fourth overall) and the Air Canada Centre in Toronto (third overall).
The MTS Centre’s success through the first nine months of 2008 is significant considering the strength of the numbers for previous years. In all of 2005, the MTS Centre sold over 259,000 tickets, while in 2006 the facility sold just over 281,000 tickets. And with three months remaining in 2008, which will include such shows as Neil Young (Thursday), two nights of Celine Dion (Oct. 27 and 28), Lenny Kravitz (Oct. 29), the Backstreet Boys (Nov. 12), and Carrie Underwood (Dec. 2), the likelihood of record numbers in 2008 are very good.

19th in the world
11th in North America
3rd in Canada

nice.

This ranking will surly drop when both Edmonton and Calgary build new arenas that will outperform Winnipeg's; it's only a matter of time.

Fuck dude; give it a rest already

Seriously; can we not have at least one thread without some arrogant outsider coming here and telling us how inferior Winnipeg is to the rest of Canada? Is this not possible???????????????

Both Edmonton and Calgary are larger venues in cities with an extra 250 thousand people to draw from. In fact Winnipeg, Calgary, and Edmonton generally are on the same concert tours. The fact of the matter is the people that set up shows at MTS have done a very good job. Granted in Winnipeg they replaced the old "garbage can" barn and replaced it with a modest 15000+ seating 140 million entertainment complex (I emphasize entertainment complex) designed for sports and shows with good acoustics. This has definitely increased the number of shows coming through town. Well if Edmonton and Calgary have to build 20000 seating 350 million+ complexes to beat out Winnipeg then so be it.

What, you don't think Edmonton and Calgary are getting new arena's?

Bunch of overly defensive people on the Winnipeg section.. interesting.

I have no idea why people would be jealous.

That isn't what he was getting at. It's the fact that Winnipeg comes out on top in something and out-of-towners come here and shit all over it. Many upon many times this happens in Winnipeg threads. Good things happen for the city and out-of-town forumers come in and shit all over it.

Bottom line is that yes, Edmonton and Calgary will be getting new arenas, but so what? We all know that. Methinks some out-of-towners that come here to stir the pot are a tad envious of the Peg, and that is a good thing, show we are competitive

I'm not envious at all if anything, I'm happy for Winnipeg.

I just found some of the comments overly defensive. Regardless of what others come here and post, nobody should take it personally.

Unless both cities are planning to demolish Rexall Place and The Saddledome I doubt that the rankings will change. In fact, Edmonton and Calgary would most likely slip in the rankings on a building by building basis as both cities could end up with two large venues like Vancouver. And most likely the buildings will be owned by different organizations that would be competing for the same concerts and events.

This is the first intelligent comment made so far.

For the record, I really like MTS Centre, and like the progress the Peg is making as of late. Winnipeg = most underrated city in Canada (and this is coming from an Edmontonian).

Please explain your reasoning for this.

As it stands right now, Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton all get most of the same large tours. If anything, Calgary and Edmonton get a few big tours each year that will bypass Winnipeg.

Yet despite this the MTS centre is still out drawing them.

What's going to change all that much when Calgary and Edmonton build newer arenas?

Anyone find the link for the list?

As for the whole Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton thing. It is not the size of the venue but the number of events, plus tickets sold. Obviously Winnipeg makes better use of the facility. So be it.

markus41 is a prick who occassionally floats over to winnipeg threads and shits all over the place for no reason....the reaction was not simply for that comment but for the many other equally enlightening contributions that he has made in the past.

who cares about what edmonton and calgary will do 5 years into the future...this list had nothing to do with either city....its about today and it is an amazing accomplishment for a city of winnipeg's size.

the MTS centre cost of $140 million is a bit misleading...eventhough it was only a few years ago, that building would easily cost $250m to build today....probably more.
