I do think that a convention hotel is a huge opportunity just waiting for a developer to capitalize on it...I'm really surprised that Marriott hasn't moved on that yet. Maybe it's up to the city government to throw someone a bone? If the developers aren't doing it on their own, the City Council needs to find a way to encourage it.

I'd take that one in a heart beat. I'm with Urbanboy on that I'd rather not lose anymore historic buildings. So I'd much rather lose the ugly Marriott and replace it with something like this. I love the rendering. And this one is not such a stretch of the imagination.

I agree as well, I don't like the idea of loosing those buildings on the south side of 100 S, plus they are all currently occupied and that is pretty impressive for downtown right now.

The current Marriott location is a prime location for the 1000 + room hotel, plus it's not that pretty of a building or historic. I had proposed that a Marriott expansion should have been included with CCC incorporated above the Nordstrom. Below is a rough image that I proposed on this subject, while the height doesn't do anything for the skyline it does bring the downtown Marriott to over 1000 rooms. I would however love it if they place a substantially taller hotel on the current site.

It's perfect!!!!!!.....I LOVE IT. It's just what we need,what if we built it to the north, just a few yards, say 30-40 yards from the already existing building,to have a 2-tower thingy goin on.Either way, it's what we should be looking towards.We can call it "PEAKS-TOWER"at the Marriott.With a club at the top floor,called the"525-Club".Any other suggestions??...........salt lake 4life.

Bring the hieght Salt Lake,we're waiting patiently....after all, once we build a 500' plus hotel....They'll be talking of another 500'-600' footer to be built.....got love this town people!!!! HA!HA!..............SALTLAKE4LIFE.

Hey blueline, your proposal looks very much like the 1000+ footer I proposed a few months back...... I'm going to assume coincidence

But I LOVE your enthusiasm man and it's just what we need to keep SLC on track with the future. I don't know WHY everyone is so against something this tall. So WHAT if it sticks out. That's what will make it iconic! All we would need to do ismake several adjustments to its design, and its location... but NOT IT'S HEIGHT!
Arky's design, although more practical, it is very blande and generic so it is more likely to be built. Just like the City Creek towers.

Hey arky, can you tweak your design a little bit so it doesn't blare "ANYTOWNANYWHERE"?
Thanks.... sorry for being such a party pooper ya'll. I'm just in a bad mood and I think that if we DO build a supertall there WILL be buildings to follow to prevent eternal sore-thumb-ness, even though it's FAR preferable to the plateau that is the current scourge of our fair city's skyline.

With the new direct route to Asia coming up, there's no way SLC will be able to get away with not having a convention center hotel closer than the Grand America, LOL. I say tear down the old Mariott, and build the new 'Arky Tower.' It would be nice though if we could have some kind of interesting top on it. Something along the line of the 'Cash Register' in Denver. The Cash Register's top makes that building. Or even the library tower in L.A., and you could still accomodate a helicopter pad.

State tourism officials stepped forward Monday to lend their financial support to promoting nonstop Delta Air Lines flights between Salt Lake City and Tokyo.
The state Board of Tourism Development approved the allocation of $400,000 to advertise flights to and from Japan, a route Delta has said it is evaluating in light of the success of its Salt Lake-to-Paris connection.

Great thing to hope for and I too would like to see it. However, 500-600 foot buildings need to be profitably filled.

I have never really understood the non melding of the central downtown core. Obviously, this has been discussed forever.

Yet, I like the way the DT is gathering momentum. It takes a lot more than wishing 500 plus foot buildings. There has to be a need.

I am not trying to be a prick when I ask this next question.

Does anyone actually and really feel the need for Tall to really tall buildings at this point in time?

The one thing that I see as the only viability is that it is only going to get more expensive to weight. Then again. who wants to build buildings that will be vacant monoliths?

For the reasons you mentioned, a hotel seems like the only viable option for a new tall building in SLC (other than those going up now for CCC) in the near future. Given the current economy and the new condos and office space going in now (222 S. Main/CCC) it seems unlikely that any new office towers or condos with greater than 15 floors will be announced anytime within the next few years. A new convention hotel is the best chance the city has, but aside from our wishful thinking on the forum, is there any real activity on that front?

Yes.

Just like what arkhitektor just said, SLC is in demand for a new major hotel near the convention center and that this hotel will be the next big thing for Salt Lake City.

I met with Wasatch this morning and Delloy Hansen told me that he has tabled The Providence Place Condos. The money just didn't work for the project. He said they were handing it back over. To who I don't know and didn't ask. Just thought I'd let everyone know.
