I have to say that, while I the building looks nice enough outside and inside, I am more than a little disappointed in how suburban it looks - It's hardly the most efficient use of land, considering how close this plot is to what is supposed to be the region's "second downtown". Very low-rise, lots of parking lot. The building could definitely have a smaller footprint, especially next to what could some day be Surrey's (albeit inferior) answer to Stanley Park.
Assuming that anybody plans on following through with skytrain down Fraser highway (still very up in the air, I realize), presumably there would be a station here, and one would think they would want to use the land more efficiently so as to maximize residential density in the area in the future. I'm not asking for a skyscraper by itself in the middle of a forest - something in the area of 8-10 storeys would have been nice, with a parking garage to boot. Land at this location, right next to a large park, and one day well connected to transit, will likely be a lot more valuable than this design would lead anybody to believe. I think this area has genuine, but underrated, potential. Anybody with me on this?
Having said that, I realize that this "second downtown" talk is, for all of the positive things we've seen so far, still largely talk. Given that they're still building like this, I wonder if Surrey will be a "second downtown" in any of our lifetimes?
Not to entirely override the positive things that are happening in the city, of course. The very fact that healthcare is improving south of the Fraser, and that there is even talk of building a med school here, is cause for optimism.
