I don't understand how such a building can have a floating foundation! Wasn't there ANY drilling down that reached bedrock?! Or is the bedrock that sits under Houston at a very near level?

Oh I'm sorry. Was I suppose to laugh?

When does assembly commence for the second tower crane?

The closest bedrock under Houston would be the Wilcox formation at about 7000 feet. Thats probably the reason they didn't drill down to it, but I'm no engineer, just a geologist.

How if they dont drill into the bedrock do they secure buildings in Houston. Do all of the modern skyscrapers have a cantilever system? What does the JP Morgan Chase tower use to secure its foundation?

It's already up. Happened in the past few days.

Here's a small pic from the webcam. I'll try and get a better one this week.

The cranes have a very big presence downtown...nice to see especially after all of the destruction of the hurricane. I tried to get some photos today, but it was too difficult from the angles that I passed.

If anyone could answer the foundation question that would be very much appreciated! Yes, how exactly are such as this one and others including the Chase tower supported?! One would figure there would HAVE to be something such as bedrock that is being used to support them... With a floating foundation, wouldn't the towers sink into the ground over time? Just a thought...

Or 2003.

I wish I'd taken a photo during that time, but I remember that a number were happening all at once: 717 Texas (Calpine Center), Reliant Energy Plaza, Hilton Americas, Toyota Center & Garage, Inn at the Ballpark...

From Discovery Green Yesterday...

I was browsing the web and found the photo in the attached pdf. I know the photo cant be that old, because the Toyota Center and Hilton are almost finished. Anyhow if you look closely, you can see a whole heap of cranes around downtown. I counted 9. Maybe there are more.

Enjoy...

Do you know what a bell caisson is? It takes the load of a column and distributes it over a wider area, so that the firm support of bedrock is not needed, and the clay soil can support even these tall buildings.
