No they aren't if they are done properly. Have you ever even come near a Mies building? Especially at night, their base draws you in like a bug to a bug lamp, its so pretty. Have you ever been in river north? Have you ever been in streeterville? There is a world of difference to the two. One is full of pomo concrete crap and the other is full of "steel and glass shoeboxes", you go take a walk in those two neighborhoods and tell me which one is more pleasant...
Go take a look at 30W Oak down the street from Elysian and tell me if you think that feels sterile, for some reason I think a glass and concrete lobby flanked by a reflecting pool and flower gardens with pillars rising out of them is far from sterile, but ok, whatever you think...
