coloprecaster, some of those corners and joints look pretty bad. Are they going to do something magical to make it look a lot better?

I'm not sure which ones you're refering to but here are the ones that stand out to me as a problem.

In the red circle I see the reveals don't line up. In the blue circle I see the angle of the miter edge just didn't quite line up. With that being said I still have a huge respect for this producer for the difficultly of the product used on this project. I would imagine that the caulking will be of a color that will help hide the panel joints which at the moment are much darker then the cast in joints. All of us will always know they are there but the typical person will not have a clue.

Other things I noticed is the amount of staining already on the panels. If you guys wanted an aged look then you already have it.

The other issue for me is that the size of the sealant joints on the cornice does not appear uniform.

I suppose that what we're all hoping for is that the joints will end up something like this:

But this is going to be pretty hard when the inconsistancies in the joint widths.

thanks, colo. what you circled was what I was talking about. I know what you mean about how good the joints are, considering. It's hard enough for me to get a good irregular joint when using wood, and wood is cut at the spot, and easily further modified. With that being said, I'm glad they are using a lighter caulk. With this building, it is the average observer I am worried about. I'd rather there be some amazing building I'm super excited about, but we aren't gonna get it with this, so I'm settling for at least not repulsing your average human, architecture/building-enthusiasts' opinions aside

So what material are they gonna use for the roof of the lower building? Slates, copper, bricks (unlikely looking at the construction), iron sheet, or zinc maybe?
It looks pretty strange how they're constructing it. Far from authentic.

But overall, I really like this project. Just imagine they'd have pooped out another boring glass-steel box at this place...

I realize that I'm a detractor here, but I like this building. The precast cladding does make the neighborhood more homogenous and I'm okay with that. Nobody seems to criticize the UES of NYC for homogenous looking buildings.

^^^ This is a bad kind of homogenous. This is a sterile kind of homogenous with no texture and a disney-world feel. Compare that to the UES which is certainly not sterile and oozes with texture...

Then again I would argue that this neighborhood isn't very homogenous in the first place but rather diverse and varied, but that's a whole different arguement.

No they aren't if they are done properly. Have you ever even come near a Mies building? Especially at night, their base draws you in like a bug to a bug lamp, its so pretty. Have you ever been in river north? Have you ever been in streeterville? There is a world of difference to the two. One is full of pomo concrete crap and the other is full of "steel and glass shoeboxes", you go take a walk in those two neighborhoods and tell me which one is more pleasant...

Go take a look at 30W Oak down the street from Elysian and tell me if you think that feels sterile, for some reason I think a glass and concrete lobby flanked by a reflecting pool and flower gardens with pillars rising out of them is far from sterile, but ok, whatever you think...
