I agree with you. I think that section of Streeterville - while none of the individual new buildings are going to make the pages of top architecture magazines - has an unexpected greatness. I really can't complain about the way it's turning out - no thanks to the City, really, but thanks to SOAR and perhaps high hopes of the Spire around the corner.

Or, were you just commenting on Solarwind's photography skills?

SoNo Update 9/15

(British School at right foreground)

This tower has some beautiful concrete finishes that my quick snapshots can't do justice to - buttery smooth in some places, heavily textured in others - really first rate.

Also, great to see operable windows on many of these new towers - in addition to providing good old-fashioned low-tech ventilation, they help to break up/enliven the surface.

A guy filming music videos who has a bad Point-and-shoot camera? I love it.

CoBL, thanks a lot for the large contributions you've made. It looks like you're going to give us a lot of unique perspectives, given the track record already.

Cbotnyse, I think I agree with you now on the glass for 110 Superior. It's not my favorite, but it's made a nice impact on the area from a variety perspective. Silver Tower is looking OK as well.

The image consists of three pictures stitched together with a diminished vertical perspective, so the photo isn’t quite natural, but I found it interesting and posted it anyway.

Maybe that was it. Good work with the stitching, though.

Honte: I agree with you about that section of Streetervilile, but I was referring specifically to that photo.

You're totally right, honte. I think it's the textural diversity: The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. If only River North had turned out this way...

I agree with you. The really exciting aspect for me is that there is a kind of unspoken thematic context to the designs: Color, tactile distinction, and material diversity (perhaps these together comprise what you refer to as "textural diversity").

One might try to argue that Weese (Time Life - orange and very rough with Cor-Ten) and Schipporeit-Heinrich (Lake Point Tower - Bronze and Green in glazed brick and smooth bronzed curtain) set the tone for this long ago.

It's great that today's designers seem to have picked up on this. The Spire and Hovey's tower, when () they both happen, will reinforce this concept.

There was a drilling truck taking soil samples all over this site (surface lot) last month.

Ronald McDonald's new digs
BY DAVID ROEDER

...Porter plans a 13-story building that would be the largest Ronald McDonald House in the world. It would contain 90 guest rooms and be designed by the firm Antunovich & Associates.

Speaking of 2520, there are a couple of those little tractors that do demo up on the roof. Showed up yesterday. Looks like the last big bit of demo is getting geared up.

Ronald McDonald House

It is very unfortunate that not only with a good context building being lost but a mediocre firm like Antunovich is designing the replacement.
