As reported in the TJ today (

SAINT JOHN - An information session on a housing project planned by the Church of St. Andrew and St. David, for the corner of Duke and Charlotte Streets, will take place Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church hall.
Preliminary drawings and plans for Abbey St. Andrew, which already has the approval of the city's Heritage Development Board, will be on display. Directors from the church's housing committee will be available to discuss what is intended for the 91 units of mixed income housing to be built on site which is behind the historic church at 164 Germain Street.
The church is still seeking advice on whether it has to take the project to the city's Planning Advisory Committee, but the preliminary finding is that it is not necessary because the land is already zoned for the use intended by the church, said Bill Thomas, minister at St. Andrew and St. David.
The plan envisions eight townhouses fronting on Charlotte and Duke streets, built in a style similar to homes on Horsfield and Duke streets. The major block of mixed income apartments are proposed for the interior area of the site.
An interior walkway will link this apartment block to additional apartments set back from the street above the Charlotte Street townhouses. Surface parking, underground parking and secure bicycle storage are planned for the site as well as a play area and green space for young children.
Following the presentation by the housing committee there will be time to discuss the project with the directors over coffee and light refreshments.
The church is hopeful it will break ground on the project in early December and open the doors before the end of 2009.
