On the other hand, the steel could be for the FT. Don't they have to keep the steel above the core? The core is looking pretty high these days.

Doubt it is to remove the ramp. Maybe it's for the memorial, but seriously I have no idea.

I think it could well be that. Again, from lowermanhattan.info:
  • Memorial crews plan to remove the ramp into the WTC site in September 2008 to continue construction on the south footprint

It could also be for the PATH tracks, looks like they are covering them with steel beams...

All I have to say is it's about damn time something happened at the site. Too bad the tower isn't all that great with a relatively meager height and giant useless spire not to mention stupid and pretentious name.

At least tower 2 is a winner but it's still sad to see this thing being overrun by the bureaucrats.

Pretentious? Give it up. You don't have to like the name, but explain how it's pretentious. It's not ok to mention freedom anymore?

^^^It isn't pretentious.
I believe he used pretentious for lack of a better word.

The name 'Freedom Tower' is jingoistic, as is the height of 1,776 feet.

(it's also obvious PhxPavilion is a troll)

That was mostlikely a reference to the first steel beam erected for the 9/11 Memorial.

Troll? Am I not allowed to voice my opinion? Funny you don't see the irony in such a claim given the topic of discussion.

Lets face it, the name is just a knee jerk reaction; as was the constant overzealous patriotism applied to everything after 9/11.

I think images like this show the potential of the Freedom Tower, but the tower by itself is not magnificent by world standards. It is not 1776 feet tall, and not even as tall as one of the first two WTC towers. The Block/memorial was a waste of space when one could have built it vertically or even on top of the Freedom tower.

Twin tower structures that were *actually* 1776 feet tall would be impressive even in Dubai or Shanghai. It is the United States, we need to let the government regulations die and build something magnificent that will break records for decades like a 3000 ft Art Deco SOM masterpiece. Not some distorted Leibeskind or Gehry "building" that looks like a deformed piece of rainbow colored feces/clay.

Yes that was a swipe at both of those architects. The EMP building here in Seattle looks so horrendous on the cityscape it has to be seen. From Leibeskind's poetry the man actually does make a huge number of references to poop. I do not understand the fraction of people who think their works are beautiful. Beautiful buildings arent supposed to be made out of images from psychedelic Salvidore Dali paintings!!!

^I agree with your sentiment. The Freedom tower is losing its luster, and when renderings usually make a tower for glorious and grandeur, the real product falls short. Given this, the Freedom tower renderings do not embody those characteristics and perhaps the real version will fall even shorter.

I think the whole design looks cluttered and unoriginal. I would have preferred the original twin towers rebuilt as they were, but with higher quality materials and some kind of high tech emergency evac system. Heck even TWO "Freedom Towers" of the same height right next to each other would have been better than all those shorter slanted roof buildings (despite it's intended sunlight objective- will it really be that noticeable anyways?). Still can't believe this design got accepted.

I think that one rendering is an impressive display, but just from that angle. It kind of seems like the view of downtown Shanghai from the Pudong river. It looks like a new, more neon Manhattan. But from all other angles it shows block after block of empty space between buildings and JinMao/SWFC.

It's also like this in Dubai. I do not understand the point of building numerous 1000 footers if you can buy that much square footage of desert just a mile away??? It's kind of like a mini-Manhattan but with no rivers or other Boroughs to force the buildings vertically.

Freedom tower is taller than the old WTC by roof height, spire, and pinnacle.

And by the way, that graphic is old and not the current design for the other major towers.
