-Why Quebec city doesn't have a CFL franchise is mind blowing, probably the biggest untapped football market in the country! 750,000 in the metro and up to 1,000 000 in the greater Quebec region!
-Kelowna is growing rapidly and has a decent minors sports thing going on, I could see the CFL giving it a shot...
-Intothewest's right, London should easily have one!

list, redux

Vancouver
Victoria
Kelowna-BC Interior
Calgary
Edmonton
Regina
Saskatoon
Winnipeg

Toronto
Hamilton
London
Ottawa
Montreal
Quebec
Halifax
x-northern Ontario? Windsor? Kitchener-Waterloo? Gatineau?

If there were suitable stadiums in more cities there would surely be more teams.

It really is a shame that the Canadian government provides such little money for spart infrastructure. In Europe almost every city of size has a stadium for soccer(football) .. in the US there are huge state government investments for new facilities of many different sports. National sports should be considered along the same lines as other cultural events.

In Canada .. it seems that sports are really not deemed an important part of society. Its a shame, because major sports is a good way to connect the nation. Imagine .. Halifax vs Victoria ... now that would be cool!!

Was busy so I didn't watch the first 59m.
But I catched the last 5 sec and that's all I needed to see.

THIS IS THE BEST FINISH THIS YEAR IN THE CFL!!! MAYBE ONE OF THE TOP ALL-TIME!!!

Talks of CFL in Moncton continue

CFL commissioner, Mayor George LeBlanc spoke this week about possibility of team based in the city

By Brent Mazerolle
Times & Transcript Staff

It's probably a bit early to be shopping for souvenir Moncton Maritimers jerseys -- it's way too early in fact to say what a Moncton-based CFL team would one day be called -- but at least the right people are talking about the idea.

The commissioner of the Canadian Football League told the Times & Transcript earlier this month that he looked forward to talking to Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc about the possibility of the league expanding into Atlantic Canada.

It took a few weeks for LeBlanc and commissioner Mark Cohon to find time in their hectic schedules to have a chat, but Moncton's mayor said yesterday they finally got the opportunity this week.

"We talked about Moncton and looking for opportunities for the future," LeBlanc said. "We agreed to keep exploring the idea (of a CFL franchise here)."

"I also pointed out to him that we are used to hosting big events," LeBlanc said, recounting that he mentioned the success of the Magnetic Hill concert site, particularly in hosting the Rolling Stones and the Eagles. "We have a track record here and we know how to do it," he said.

Beyond keeping the lines of communication open, the mayor said it was a good chance to ensure Cohon was aware not just of the facilities Metro Moncton has, but the facilities the city is building.

Would CFL players one day be practicing at the Rocky Stone field currently being upgraded significantly? Would they play games at the city-owned 20,000 seat outdoor stadium being built on the Université de Moncton campus for the 2010 IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships?

Cohon said the league is in a position to look at expansion with last year's average stadium attendance reaching its highest since 1983. Television ratings are also up 19 per cent so far this season.

"We are now going to start really thinking about what are the new opportunities for the league and expansion is definitely on our agenda and is something we need to explore," Cohon said.

The CFL last tested the waters for possible expansion into the Maritimes in 2005 with an exhibition game held in Halifax.

At that time, former commissioner Tom Wright was looking at the feasibility of adding a 10th CFL franchise by 2008, but only if a 25,000-seat stadium was in place and the league was convinced private financial backers were in place.

The stadium being built in Moncton will come close to that 25,000 seat number, and the design allows for some expansion.

Personal note - I have read a couple of comments previously posted in this thread. It is true that Halifax is larger and has better air connections than Moncton but Moncton is not the back woods. There are direct flights from the Greater Moncton International Airport to Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Hamilton. This at least covers the Eastern Conference. There is a one-stop WestJet flight to Edmonton (via Toronto) as well. The HRM (Halifax Regional Municipality) has about 380,000 people. Southeastern New Brunswick (Westmoreland/Albert/Kent Counties - about the same geographic size, ie about the size of P.E.I.) has about 200,000. Moncton is also a reasonable driving distance from Fredericton, Saint John and Charlottetown; Halifax isn't. There are 1.3 million people within a 2.5 hour drive of Moncton. Moncton isn't called the "Hub City" for nothing!

Further thoughts on CFL expansion:

(1) - The country can support about 14 (possibly 16) CFL teams.

(2) - The CFL should avoid U.S. expansion. It didn't work the first time and I see no reason why it would work any better in the future. The presence of U.S. franchises in the league IMO denigrates the cultural significance of the league and of the sport of Canadian Football in general. There would be no natural rivalries with any U.S. based teams and I think this would hurt fan support.

(3) - New franchises should go first to Ottawa (in the works) and probably to Quebec City. This would give a two conference ten team league with east/west parity, covering all of Canada's largest cities. Only after this situation has stablized should further expansion occur (likely in 7-10 years).

(4) - The league then should move to two six team conferences. The new franchises would be in Victoria and in Halifax/Moncton. The configuration of the league would then be:

Eastern Conference

Toronto
Ottawa
Hamilton
Montreal
Quebec City
Halifax or Moncton

Western Conference

Winnipeg
Saskatchewan
Calgary
Edmonton
Vancouver
Victoria

(5) - The location of additional franchises after this expansion is somewhat less certain but I would favour an additional southern Ontario franchise (?London) and perhaps a BC interior team (?Kelowna). This would give 14 teams.

3 consecutive stops at 1 yard line with 3 consecutive penalties to the Als and with 0 sec left.
Also with 12 sec left, what a tackle!!! Watch again and you'll see!

No doubt it was a great finish for MTL, but BC really turned up the suck.

standings

In the West, it's a tough battle between Saskatchewan, Edmonton, Calgary. BC is a little too far.

Saskatchewan: 7-2
Edmonton: 5-3
Calgary: 5-3
BC: 4-5

In the East, it's all about 1 team: ALS

Montreal: 6-3
Toronto: 3-5
Hamilton: 2-6
Winnipeg: 2-7

A familiar statement you should get used to when it comes to Calgary sports franchises...

Kenton Keith is being cut from the Colts. Looks like he may be heading back to the CFL.
