Scott Construction’s Opal condo project promises to add sparkle to Richmond’s skyline

General contractor Scott Construction Group is building the Opal condominium for developer Kamdo Tower Inc.

The firm of Andrew Cheung Architects Inc. is acting as both architect and interior designer on the 16-storey, 87-unit project. The building will also offer retail and restaurant space.

Consultants on the project include Gage-Babcock & Associates Ltd. (code); Aqua-Coast Engineering Ltd. (building envelope); Brown Strachan Associates (acoustic); Jones, Kwong, Kishi Consulting (structural); Stantec Consulting Ltd. (mechanical and electrical); and Geopacific Consultants Ltd. (geotechnical).

The 50 story tower is old news....there are a few key developers that are working together to put together some pretty amazing signature towers for the city that will be 50+ storys....I would suggest that anyone interested come to the Central City open house on Sept 11 and 14th as they will have 3D models of central city and what they have planned in the coming years! I am sure you will all be pretty impressed with what you see.

Yes, as I have mentioned in the past, rumors were circulating. Now there is an official proposal for one at Holland Pointe at 99 Ave and KGH, part of a 3 tower complex. I wouldn't go as far as to say it is a signature tower...more or less the same infinity crap.

look to see a lot more street-oriented townhouses attached to towers in the future, well more so than currently created...

As Volksboi mentioned, there will be a 3D flyover model of the City Centre with current developments only.

Yes that is not one of the "Signature" towers I am refering too, however this tower is good news as well..Though I heard the highest tower in holland point was going to be 46 stories....There is some pretty amazing stuff in the pipeline!

Will they be office towers or residential?

I believe the signature towers he is refering to are a part of the urban village project. If thats the case dont expect them to be built anytime soon, considering the 4 story condos and Ultra have to be built first.

Long term, Whalley is going to have an impressive skyline/mini downtown. Unfortunately, the process is taking entirely too long. During this real estate boom (2003-present) there has been a grand total of 1 skyscraper built and occupied in the entire area (Infinity 1). The rest have been those ridiculous bulky 4 story condos that are taking up prime real estate.

And the city isnt doing anything to help. It took them 3 years to basically cut down a bunch of trees and plant grass for Holland Park. Had they done it a few years back which was the original plan, the Holland Pointe Towers may have been proposed a long time ago, instead of just recently.

Same goes for the Central City 2 Office tower that is planned across the parking lot from Central City. They had the option of moving City Hall to Whalley a long time ago, but instead decided to renovate the existing place. Now they decide they want to build a tower, only after spending millions in tax payers dollars in renovations. They still havent found the funds for a new Library for Whalley, yet are spending millions to build a volunteer center for the olympics just so they can pretend to be a "venue city"

it is south of the skytrain guideway, on the west side of KGH. It is strictly residential.

The movement of City Hall to City Centre is the idea of the current mayor. The previous renovations were under the guidance of the previous mayor, Doug McCallum.

Those 'bulky 4 storey buildings' are great for the urban environment. These 50 storey towers are destroying the urban environment.

I can assure you that there are plans outside of the urban village development. You are correct though, the urban village has some amazing plans for the land they own and have lots of room to build several towers...

I wouldn't doubt that for even a second. I'm actually pretty impressed how dedicated Surrey has been to the architecture of the city centre. It's even one of their goals in their community plan! There will be no Yaletown glass for Surrey.

As for the "Signature" Towers, I can't wait to see what they have in store. Hopefully they will be more expressive and dynamic than the boring, glow-in-the-dark paint adorned "centerpiece" that is the Living Shangri-la.

Trinity Towers, the project by Bosa for the St Marys hospital site has been cancelled.

Wouldn't be surprised if we get a similar announcement regarding the Labbatts site.

Bosa put that land up for sale a few months back so no surprise there. Kind of sucks though that they tore down a fully functioning hospital to replace it with a gravel lot.
