171 N Wabash is a sight for sore eyes. This building is coming not a moment too soon, what with the current overhaul and beautification of Wabash Ave. That lot was practically the only empty lot left. A stylish design too, but what's that cylindrical-looking thing going from the top of the podium to about midway up the tower? A cool staircase or elevator maybe?

Now they just need to work on the surface lots on South Wabash. There are a few right across from each other near Congress and Wabash I believe...plus that god awful small parking garage.

As may be relevant in honte's upcoming story on the building, the cornerstone on Erie says it was erected in 1924. That's a lot of room for history, even before the 1960 debate.

I also see some monotonous repetition in SCB's loop infill residential buildings. But since they're not that bad, I am satisfied taking these as merely lost opportunities rather than as actual harm sustained. Maybe this design approach is allowing SCB to provide their work for reduced fees, thereby fortuitously permitting developers to choose SCB over Pappageorge or someone more harmful? Just my uneducated speculation here.

I thought perhaps that lower section might be a parking garage, so that the cylinder would be elevator/stair for that component. It's not the ideal shape, and kind of tall, for a parking garage, but given the immediately blocked views and the rumbling of the el, it wouldn't be surprising if they are avoiding low residential floors.

Uneconomical to squeeze a 1000 footer onto that site. Hopefully that site will see some sort of expensive boutique office tower for small, image-conscious businesses. Like a Foster Hearst or something.
