Drove past the conference center and history library today. Looks like crews are digging a path for the next leg of a resurfaced City Creek. Wish I had my camera with me- any of our budding photographers wanna catch some next time you're down town??

Speaking of the History Library, that bldg looks very nice.

I was disappointed that the original plans for City Creek resurfacing never came to pass. I read an article once that said the church was going to have a 100-foot-wide swath of trees and landscaping surrounding a resurfaced City Creek running several blocks along North Temple. Instead, we got a tiny glorified gutter in front of the Conference Center surrounded by sidewalk.

Ok guys, the content in this thread lately has hit an ultimate low. And I know that I am not the only one who feels that way. Its to the point where I don't bother even reading the forums almost. Its almost embarrassing to me sometimes to read some of your guys posts, and know that other cities' forumers are laughing at us. I understand that everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, and thats fine, but sometimes it turns into a heated debate.
So, lets try to stay on topic of Downtown Salt Lake Development projects, and construction here, and take your BSing talk elsewhere.

And lastly "lets not bicker and argue about who killed who"

I also saw that it appears they are resurfacing the creek along N. Temple in front of the new history building. It appeared to me that it might be a bit more substantial than the one in front of the conference center, as they are currently constructing a very beautiful and large stone wall. I think this will be nice.

the report is really interesting to read. They list the good points of each site, the drawbacks, funding for the theater. I guess that they want to take the sales tax generated from CCC when it is finished, and use it for the theater. BTW, they estimate that CCC will generate 20 million a year in sales tax once its built. plus the theater is estimated to cost around 80 million dollars. so, I would imagine that CCC will be a huge benefit to the city once its done.

Anyways, read the report yourself to get a better understanding.

interesting opinions and attitudes about it all.... Its such a strange dynamic. We all know that the Church is responsible for a lot of the developement downtown and everyone has an opinion. Most of the people who live near all this developement are NOT lds... and yet while the church still has its stake in the city and its future... its members have fled out to the burbs and have their opinions of it all as well. I think its important to understand the context of where everyone's argument is coming from and not necessarily what you percieve it to be....
There is an increasing urban non lds population where downtown is their neighbourhood... and there is a suburban foundation of church members where their city is the icon of their church.... so naturally there are going to be strong opinions on developement and its going to involve the church..

I've decided which spot I like best for Salt Lake City's Broadway-scale Theater: The Regent Street option going North and South without the through street. The one on the top right hand corner. It incorporates all existing buildings facing Main Street into the theater. I really like the "Grand Hall" idea, and the Foyer!

This would be the face of the new Broadway Scale Theater. The smaller building to the right will also be a grand hall, which it already is, and will be incorporated into the project. I really like this location because it saves these older buildings and gives them a new use. Also, this way the grand hall, which currently is the Utah museum of Art and History (closed until they receive the finances to fix it), will finally get it's deserved restored facade.

Oog. It may just be my 7 years working on Regent Street, but I hate that location for a theatre. Burying our showcase theatre in the middle of a series of alleys doesn't seem like the way to go.

I'll have to download and look at the report tomorrow. I'm glad things are finally moving on this project, in any case.

Thanks for that post Viper, I think I've looked at it a dozen times this morning. All are great, but I think I'm leaning toward the Regent Street plan.

I think I like the O4B Block 70 plan the most. ( The one that has the office tower on the corner of Main and 100 South. )

I agree with Urbanboy, I really like the idea of a grand foyer on Main (04A). As well as retail on main and mixed use and retail on regent street.

Oh and Projects, they all have a proposed office tower on them. Well all the ones on Main and Regent.

I like both 04A block 70 and 04B block 70, but leaning more towards 04a block70. For some reason I like the new street that will be added, breaking up the block and making it more of a walkable block with more views and places to stroll.

Viperlord: I'm learning that your posts are filled with content. Thank you very much for the SLC Broadway Theatre report.

After reading it, one of the proposed locations, the Utah Pantages Theatre site (Blk. 69), should be pushed aside. Too many construction and parking issues (Sorry, Rick Howa. There's got to be a better use for that wonderful old theatre that conversion to a venue capable of holding Broadway productions).

Although I like the integration of the proposed theatre into Blk 70, mainly to add to a wonderful Blk, this site is less than optimal to me as well. I think it would be a mistake to diffuse theatre assets across the CBD.

Therefore, I like either of the Broadway locations. I think the long-term goal should be to create a theatre district. I think either of the Broadway (3rd So) locations offer more potential for synergistic development--restaurants, et cetera. The construction and property acquisition costs also appear lower, although, if I read the report correctly, the Broadway site would NOT qualify for the tax credit, which may ultimately be the deal breaker.

Given the tax credit consideration, my guess is that Blk 70 will be the choice. It will be interesting to see what happens.
