I heard a rumour of a resto of some sort since they used to own an Indian place before? Just a rumour tho... I prolly heard it on here! haha

yea, I heard that. The owner is the guy who used to own the British Raj on King William. I bet he's glad he got the heck out there before LIUNA killed the street.

The flower shop across the street is moving into this building, at least they had a sign up stating that about a week ago. I don't think there will be a resto, as the burrito/panini shop wanted to move there but the landlord was not willing to allow a kitchen.

I stroll down there for my cappuccino from Starbucks most mornings before heading to work. Next time I'll flip out my cell phone to snap a picture.

There's a lot of transformation happening at Locke St with stores relocating to other buildings on Locke and renovations happening. By the end of the summer there should be a big difference.

WAHOOOOOO!! The Bad Dog is reopening!!
I've been on Locke only a few times since spring...time to get back there and enjoy that patio once they open again!!

not that I'm aware, but all the patio furniture is there. The signs are back up and they're working at putting the inside back together.

I candle wax store is opening up at the corner spot next to the store. The other spot is still empty, hope something good happens to that spot.

development on Locke seems to have slowed, in large part thanks to all the yuppies scared of having people on their streets.
John/Augusta area, Hess Village and James South/North are getting it right and have received the majority of my spending/dining dollars this year. Too bad. Locke has potential, but will never realize it as long as the fearmongers continue to win out with stuff like 'no Hess on Locke' etc.....

^^ it happens everywhere, unfortunately.
Once a neighbourhood gentrifies, the yuppies are comfy enough to move in and then start complaining about everything.

ex: Toronto's Church-Welesley Village. Used to be the gay ghetto, now it's littered in new highrises and the City receives tons of complaints re: Festival noise/road closures.
Also, City Place (Spadina/Front area) used to be a hole... now it's gentrified, and just as recently as Aug new residents were complaining to the City about noise & sports fan issues (fights, drunkeness, etc).

I sincerely hope my hood doesn't ever gentrify. Corktown wouldn't be 'Corktown' w/o it's rough-around-the-edges feel.

was at the Locke festival today.
A new bookstore is opening!! I think it was called Epic Books. In the old Decades spot.
Bad Dog says they open in 3 weeks. Same owners as before.
The candle store is open, and guys were working on tables/chairs in the space at the NW corner of Locke/Chatham.

Good to hear new places are opening. It's so sad to see so many empty places, and that is all over the city too. Look how many empty places are on Barton and Main etc.

There were a lot of people on the street. I thought I was gonna be able to just slide on by to get some guitar strings on my way home but nope.

There seemed to be a lot more people than last year and definitely more vendors. A lot of people in the city still aren't even aware that it the festival exists (not that there would be room for them all!)

I'm very impressed with the way Locke is coming along. I have to admit that when we first moved to the area (only a year ago), we were a tad disappointed with what the rental housing ads had touted as being something of a bustling commercial street. Not quite. Since then, however, with the Starbucks, a new deli/sandwich place (very good, by the way), crepe place (the Courtyard?), and apparently a bookstore, the street is becoming a pretty decent eating/shopping/relaxing destination. And blast it! Wouldn't you know it - Now we're living in Westdale. . . I miss Locke and downtown.

Any idea when the bookstore opens up? The west end of downtown is sorely in need of it (imo), and I can't wait to check it out.

Now, if only Locke or the south end of Dundurn (preferably Locke) would get a Fortino's or Sobey's or something (streetfront, and with a very reduced parking lot), I just might be convinced to return to the city after I leave this fall! Even a medium-format grocery store that sold decent produce and was open Sundays would do. . .

The Courtyard cafe is at 252 Locke St just south of Charlton. We tried their crepes and can't wait to go back, they also serve organic coffee in mugs I believe are handmade by the potter next door.

About the grocery store, there is an asian grocery store on Locke street you should check out, just north of the main drag on the right side. They have a lot of fish at the back so its a tad smelly at times, but they have a lot of the regular fresh produce at really good prices.

It was a Commisso's up until the late 90s, I think. Certainly too close to Dundurn to interest Fortino's, likely too small a footprint to interest any other big name grocery chains.
