Hey. I just looked at the plans for that Sympothy project, and I gotta say it looks pretty good! Plus, it's in the location I was talking about earlier that I'd like to see developed.

I hope the project gets a go ahead by the city!

I don't think Holding owned the final NW parcel that sat across from the old Bay building. If I'm not mistaken that was the last parcel to be acquired and it was after the Grand was built. I also believe that the block south of Little America was being considered more for the stadium than the block to the north.

I think that's the best placement for a convention center hotel yet. It meets all the criteria. Nearly 1,000 roooms and interior connection to the Salt Palace without going over or under the street.

And the fact that it is 52 floors is a big bonus, maybe ad a few more floors and top it out at an even 1,000 rooms.

The NW corner of the block (directly across from the Bay) he purchased in the '80s. The gadget store next to that to the south he bought in the early '90s. Next to that was a red-brick warehouse, which he bought in the mid-90s. All before the Grand was built.

Rocky had suggested the block to the south for soccer, but I think Holding should have offered his block to the north. Either would have worked, however Holding only owns a little over 1/2 of the block to the south.

a living neighborhood.

It may be nit picking but I would really like someone to point out how these non homogeous construction styles are going to be a positive definition.

I am not trying to piss people off, it is just the way I feel. I like the way the Gateway developed a continuity as if everyone was actually on the same page.

Now the different apartment and condo developments just seem to be without discussion and commonality.

If there is one thing about the east, it is that there seem to be no rush to just change styles just for the sake of doing it. Neighborhoods take on their own character (high-rise or not).

If something angular and Euro goes up then it is done with a sense of not dominating or sticking out like a sore thumb.

Of course I am kind of an interloper here even though I know and love SLC. It just seems they are building more than a few future eyesores...and they will become that not to far down the road.

Please tell me where I am wrong.

I definitely agree that downtown could use a lot more classically inspired, or "traditional" buildings. So many of our elegant historical buildings have been demolished that much of Salt Lake has a 70's feel to it . A lot of the new projects try to be edgy and different, which is fine, but I'd like to see a lot more classic looking stone or brick buildings planned to give downtown a greater feel of history.

Hmm, I'd be curious to see the gateway renderings as they were presented if anyone has access...

U. to identify finalists for commercial development on campus
The Salt Lake Tribune

Working from a short list of four developers, University of Utah officials next week will select two finalists for designing its ambitious mixed-use commercial project on the Rice Eccles Stadium parking lot. The U. is scheduled to designate one a "preferred" developer on Aug. 18 to start cooking up the Universe Project, which calls for retail, apartments, university offices, restaurants and entertainment.

Making Jam not easy
Marmalade gay club in the works
Neighbors worry about the impact of having a bar so close
By Elizabeth Miller
The Salt Lake Tribune

A new club is coming to an old spot in Salt Lake City's Marmalade district.
Brian Morris, a 45-year-old Salt Lake City man, felt there was a lack of upscale, nonsmoking gay clubs.
So he and a straight business partner, Robert McCarthy, are opening their own gay club in the Marmalade district, a neighborhood on west Capitol Hill, later this month.
"Jam is going to be upscale, nonsmoking, country-club style," Morris said. "It'll really reflect the diversity of this community."
Jam in the Marmalade, a play on the area's history as an apricot orchard and on music, hopes to be a place everyone feels welcome.

Oh, Crap!

"You might want to get used to that site there. It might be like that for awhile. I have noticed that Broadway park lofts has been way slow/dead the past while, and I found out why. I did some research on the county recorders site. There are about 10 construction material companies filing liens against Broadway Park Lofts. I would say someone is having a hard time paying the bills."

Viperlord: That's depressing news. I really liked the look of this project. It seemed just about perfect for the area. Looks like SLC maybe getting caught up in the financial woes of the national housing mess.

DMTower and NY Rick: I'm not sure about the homogeneity idea for SLC. The reason I question it is because SLC is still so new, it really doesn't have an identity. I think we need to hang on to the older buildings we do have, try to make sure the new stuff going up is as high-quality as possible, and encourage an eclectic approach. Brownstones are not for everyone, nor are Georgetown wannabees, nor cotton-market warehouses, nor Seattle shake-shingle arts-and-crafts, nor San Francisco Victorians, et cetera. In my mind, there is nothing worse than architectural imitations plopped down in the middle of the Mtn. West. The colonial office complexes in Provo and just off of state in Murray come to mind; they are hideous in those locations! I'm all for classic materials, like brick and stone, but I would like to see those materials used in buildings that are interpretations of classic styles that fit SLC.

This is just a news paper trying to make a story. There have been bars there before and from what it sounds like, just me making a bios assumption about "beer bars", is that the ones that resided in the area before Jam at Marmalade were louder and produced a more auspicious crowds then the Jam will. Also I am in marmalade all the Time cafe Marmalade is the place to be, that street, third west, is always busy and filled with taxis it would be all to simple to find a sober ride home and its not as if children will be playing on the streets when people are leaving the bar. It’s a perfect location as well with all the retail going up in that area.

I have to say however I hope that all the high end development doesn't drive up the cost of Affordable living in that area. Unfortunately Gay white men have become the poster children of Gentrification, a process that does not solve the problem of poverty but simply moves it to a newer more crowded location. I am weary that all this development may make the apartment of my dreams go up in rent so much that I will no longer be able to afford it. I love that area but I have been accepted to Westminster and it comes with the biggest price tag I have ever seen.

Property Description:
4 Story plus mezzanine and full height basement which has been home to Zim's Crafts for over 40 years is now available. This building was built as a warehouse in the early 1900's and is virtually unchanged on the interior. Wood plank floors on all levels, cast iron decorative columns and windows on all sides of the building make this property a natural for retail/residential conversion. Many historic features are still intact underneath the current facade.

I love that development project! It’s wonderful. It reminds me of the downtown Portland district you spoke about I think it looks like a lovely addition to the gateway district and I think its brick fits in very well with the Bridges at citifront.

You might want to get used to that site there too. It might be like that for awhile. This project is in the same boat. Liens up the wazoo, and notice of defaults, plus court cases as well.
It will get back on track to good of a project ot just disapear
