I was read an interesting article about the "tower of doom" on wikipedia the other day. A couple of interesting things: First the quality of the concrete is apparently not structurally sound and it would be very hard for the building to obtain a certificate of occupancy without expensive reinforcements. Second, the Egyptian company that has restarted the project wants to build a GSM infrastructure on top of the tower in a country where it is a capital offense to own a cell phone! I've heard of some crack pot ideas but that takes the cake (or at least until the next Enron!

)

Also on a side note... Priller wow! Incredible shot of Frost Tower! Dude you should talk to the Austin Economic Development Commission or the Chamber of Commerce about selling your photos to them they are that good!

That Korean building looks like it should be in Las Vegas...

Btw, there's finally some high rise office space going up in downtown. However it's only a measly 8 stories.

Driving around Austin I'm starting to see unfinished projects like the one on Enfield going toward Mopac. Does this startle anyone? I don't want another Intel popping up downtown.

That one on Enfield has been sitting idle for well over a year, long before the credt crisis hit. It's due to a dispute between the developer and contractors, if I remember correctly.

The only big unfinished and stalled project I can think of is La Vista on Lavaca. Are there others?

THAT'S the only one I know of. And it is still stalled. The developer said they were suppose to start two weeks ago.... but no action. There is activity at the construction office and I have seen her (the developers) car there this week. Not that I like the building.... but it is better than a permanent construction site! I'll be the first to send up a flare when it starts!

I was at the W site taking photos this morning when the people in the sales office asked if I wanted to take photos from their "observation deck". Okay, it's really just the outside stairs to the 2nd floor, but it worked well enough. I'll post some photos later.

I talked to one of the sales people there, one who seemed to be fairly interested in the construction process. She said they still have months of foundation work to do, that they will dig down to 50ft in some places. Also, they've just now hit bedrock in one corner of the lot, so they'll finally have to bring in some rock crunching machinery.

After that they'll do the usual drilling for piers and caissons. She said they won't actually start pouring concrete for a level until November.

Not quite sure what is going on here, but this area is a little different. That's where the theater is going to go, so I assume it has something to do with that:

Incredible pic that last one... just think how the gap on the right side will be filled in with the Austonian and W... and the 4 seasons residences on the far right at about the same height as the Ashton is now... Spring will look almost as tall as 360 (being 111 feet taller than the Monarch, and a bit closer to the vantage point) but real slender and sleek!

Never ceases to amaze me.

I still love the pic, Priller.

Another great view of skyline from that side is on the southbound Mopac frontage road at the at the Rollingwood exit coming from Zilker park. I've yet to see anyone post a pic from this area.

Ashton is what some are calling Alta Vida. Rumor has it the name may change.

One Congress is 395 feet tall. Ashton-Vida is supposed to be about 20 feet taller. Getting close to topping out.

360 and the Frost Bank tower look like they're "related" .. almost the exact same light blue and white colors..
