I guess that modern bldg was an early rendering as the Trolley Square website has something entirely different, more complementary to the rest of the site.

But the new Whole Foods with attached parking structure is so huge, it sort of ruins Trolley as well, just not as bad as that modern bldg.

I wish they would have put some real street side shoping on the west side of trolley. I don't like this grass island with trees in it in between the side walk and the shoping center. They should have brought it closer to the street. It would give it a very walkable fill and sort of tie it in with 9th and 9th.
I also don't like how a company in Portland is working on SLC greatest and most historic mall.

my gripe with trolley is the surface parking everywhere. ... That isn't attractive and really ruins the flow IMHO. The areas of parking could be kiosks, fountains, trees, flowers, cobblestone, landscaping, etc.

I love, however, that the developers of Trolley said what they were going to do, took some consideration of the neighborhood and existing building into the style of what they were building, although not as much as I would have liked, and then actually went under way with it unlike Craig Mecham.

.I have a feeling that SLC will boom within the next decade. With SLC being one of the most recession proof cities in the US we are a very safe investment in a very turmultuous time. Condos are up in demand living downtown is up in demand. People right now are looking for anyway they can to make money in real-estate with a stable economy and a hot spot for development I believe we will see some very strong growth downtown, especially with the decaying south and west valley real-estate.

I actually agree with you, however, whole foods aren’t really a store that can operate without parking like most commercial stores in trolley can. People need to get their food home some how. But fountains would look nice there not the tacky grouse fountains like in the gateway or the future city creek center fountains but nice European style fountains. And maybe a few copper or bronze statues, little five foot ones.

I think the Lexie tower will look great there. Its a nice classy building good for the area matches the area. I bet allot of these kinds of buildings will sprout around it in the surrounding neighborhoods. I also like how it’s mixed use that’s one major thing we need more of classy style buildings, good height and mixed use.

Viperlord: I am totally confused...which happens fairly often these days. Are the plans for the Trolley Square site in the second link above the actual plans, or those that were first presented? If these are the original plans and they were dumped for that horrible half-a-quonset-hut in the recently posted picture, I am truly depressed. I have no idea where that building came from? Is it a hoax?

Great video. It reminded me alot of the CCC tour video. LOL But I do like the look of this far better then the first rendering with that ugly glass building. As long as the new buildings are make out of red bricks and match the rest of Trolley Sq. then I think this over all project will fit in just fine.

I agree Projects, I think the look of the additions are more than satisfactory and integrated very well. Also, will be good to see so much of that visible auto jungle, that previously existed at ground level on the north and east sector, gone. While there is still visible parking, it's far less than what it use to be. In the future, I would like to see that south parking lot developed with more mix, like commercial and residential, with underground parking. I think that immediate area will develop upward and alot more into an urban area from now on.

You took the words out of my mouth regarding the parking Delts. I think the replacement of the parking lot on the NE side of the block as well as the hideous parking structure on the west side will make it a even more pleasant place to visit. I think the parking that is there will be important to provide a sense of accessibility to the car user, which as Justn put it is a majority of the time a necessity for the Whole Foods crowd, unless they live within a couple of blocks.
I think the overall design of the buildings in the video really compliments the original structures without attempting to duplicate them. I don't like that they are moving the tower and the bank, but overall I like the design and the feel of the proposal.

Hey Justn, A big welcome to the forum!! I have been enjoying your posts this morning, and hope you will continue to be a regular. Like you, I always wonder about out-of-state companies on development projects vs. in-state. I am glad though that this Portland group, who now owns Trolley Square, has replaced the previous Ohio group. The previous group had a very long list of complaints against it from store owners and managers. This current group realized the development potential of Trolley Square. I've thought for quite a while now that Trolley Sq. was underdeveloped. Infact, I would say that even after this current building program, there will still be much need for expansion in the next ten years, as the metro,downtown, and tourism, continues it's major growth.

Delts, like you, I've thought Trolley Square was underdeveloped, just a few steps away from being a major attraction. The new development plan, sans the modern building, looks pretty good. I loved the video on their website, noticing there was as much time spent on people walking around as there was on showing off the development plan. Seems like the developers are in the right mindset.

I would imagine that the "glass" whole foods building was an early scheme. The historic commission would have a hard time allowing that all glass wall. They require brick to be used to fit in with the rest of the block.

I love the view from Ensign Peak. I can see all of downtown, plus the IHC tower in the background and even the Jordan commons Tower and the RSL stadium in Sandy That one is hard to see. Just think in a few years we could also see the 27-story tower for SSL as well as the three towers in Sandy. What a cool view to see all these new highrises rising all up and down the east side of the valley.

I've always hated that view because it makes Salt Lake's skyline look so small. I mean, it sucks, because other than that, it's a wonderful view. Imagine if the skyline went east-west and instead of north-south, then that view would look amazing.
