I'm not too excited about the wooden panels inside the building......that is, you can clearly see all of the utilities, pipes, etc. through it when you look up:

Yeah, that looks weird. Like it's an unfinished basement.

It uses less material (the whole LEED thing, ya know )

I actually like it, the dark colour means it doesnt stand out too much, but at the same time it makes the roof higher, effectively making the room feel larger.

CK Choi building at UBC does something similar.

It sucks imo.....and it kinda reminds me of the airport's interior "office white tile" roof.

From the pics, the convention centre's roof inside looks half-assed....and the wood doesn't look that great either (which reminds me of the sharp contrast between the Richmond Canada Line wood roof station renderings and the actual IKEA roof product).

That's different though....they meant to do that, have a building's insides on the outside.

Anyone else think the wooden slats on the ceiling will be stained after installation?

Depends on the woodworking involved I guess - usually wood panelling is stained after it is affixed to the wall. My guess is that they could be doing that here too.

So what's wrong with having exposed ducting, etc in the ceiling of the Convention Centre? I'm sure the designers meant to incorporate them in the design of its interior also. They could be all polished & shiny! Why should a building hide its inner workings, or what it's made out of?

look at the distance between the floor and ceiling (using the people as a gauge)- looks to be at least 20-25 ft.
if anyone notices or better yet can even physically see beyond the wood panelling, good eyes!

Nothing really new here, but I thought I'd post these anyways.

Does anyone know the "time-line" for the new Marina and Seaplane terminal.
Is it to be finished in conjunction with the main building or at a later time?.

I was just in a restaurant in Roppongi Hills Tokyo with pretty much the same design, white walls, and ceiling just like that with the pipes and everything above exposed, and immediately thought of this. It was not very noticeable at all, even though the ceiling was certainly not as high as it will be in the convention center. It looked pretty cool, fresh, and open, actually.

Couldn't find any good pictures of it, but you can KIND of see it here:

Strawberry Vale Elementary in the Victoria area (built in 1995) is a lot like that also. When I went to have a look, a lady in the office said architects, architecture students, developers, etc, come from all over the world to see it:

http://www.patkau.ca/project/strawberry_vale.htm

The I-beam is at about ceiling height, and it also keeps the walls from collapsing since they aren't plumb. It holds the building together like a shoelace holds a shoe together.

Well the design for the marine aerodrome and marina went before the urban design panel on the 16th of July and passed easily. The buildings are pretty good looking, all angular and in dialogue with the convention centre without trying to copy it. The buildings will be built off site and floated in, as will be the walkways. The marine aerodrome requires its docks to be anchored to the bottom with weights and chains so that nothing protrudes up to interfere with wing clearances. The marina will use conventional piles. I suspect that once the pile-driving is complete the remainder of the project will come together very quickly, as in a matter of days, since they will merely be floated in a made fast to each other.

Good Stuff, thanks for the heads-up.
