Solar, looks like we covered the same ground today. I also watched the 200 West Lake demo for about 30 minutes. There is surprising little rebar in the cantilever sections of that garage. It was fun watching the lower slab collapse under the weight of pieces from the upper slab falling onto it. The garage was coming apart so fast the crew paused to move their vehicles.

Well this is the picture....as for the brands, it was posted, but I can't remember. I think 2 are standard 2.5/3 star hotels and the other one is a concept hotel of a major brand.
Without getting into specific aesthetic critiques (heh), a nice from an urban design standpoint. Nice parking ratio (presumably there will be some spillover to the large garage being built to the south), and the lonely Italianate building on the corner will be preserved and, resultingly, probably spared from demolition for a very long time since it could never be combined into a larger development site. Never say never, but it's probably safe for a while. Here's hoping at some point a handful of that stretch along Clark St is re-considered for landmarking.

I agree, those River North Italianate buidlings need to be preserved. There are still enough lots to not hinder any future development and they provide a very cool contrast to the highrises that are and will continue to go up in RN.

That's interseting because as far as I Know that little Italianate Building is toast. Unless the massing is changed, I would check this up among the sloppy rendering list. Notice how the building doesn't quite align with the photo and the traffic signal mast arm was just truncated to give the building more prominance.
Also, I concur that the remaning buildings on that Clark Street cluster must be saved. Wasn't there a movement to do just that a few yeras ago?
i want to ask my question differently. how many buildings are now standing at least 500 feet. i mean completed buildings plus buildings under construction that are actually 500 feet or taller at this point . example the chicago spire will be 2000 feet when its done, but right know its still a hole in the ground.
I'll go ahead and give the Marquee credit for a good podium. No wall of street-facing parking.
You can almost certainly thank the Landmarks Commission for that. The building is in the Motor Row district and is supposed (somehow) to complement the landmarked dealership to the north. I am certain that some effort was spent by the Commission to get a more complementary (in terms of quality) result at street level.

There was, but the property owners (primarily Friedman) fought it hard and it never came up for a vote, if I remember correctly. honte or MrD might remember more details.
It was interesting that Friedman fought it, since he's otherwise big into preservation, seemingly. Clearly he's also got a business interest to look out for, and landmarking would probably devalue a good deal of that property even if he never intends to redevelop. Of course, all it takes is for him to pass it on to a deadbeat heir or sell the portfolio upon retirement...

Fairfield Inn by Marriott, Courtyard by Marriott, and Hyatt Place. The developer is a third-party who has simply attracted all 3 hotel brands into one building, even though they are in competition.
