Yeah, it takes serious pop density (more than the South Loop) to support retail on every street anyway. I'd rather the retail be condensed into vibrant/bustling retail districts than too dispersed with lots of vacancies (ahem West Loop).

Agreed, I hate walking the west loop. i'd rather walk down an alley which is basically what the west loop is, a clean alley.

Halsted, Madison and Randolph are some of the most lively, pedestrian friendly streets in all of the downtown area. It will probably only get better.

I'll give you the west side of Halsted and both sides south of Monroe, and about two blocks of Randolph west of the highway, but Madison? Come on, that's wishful thinking even using the pick-n-choose method I used for the other two streets.

Maybe not from Halsted to about Morgan, but from Morgan all the way to the United Center is very active. I'd say the west loop is much more active than the south loop (east of Michigan). Both have a lot of room to grow though.

...Shapack also is busy with plans for the old Cedar Hotel at 1112-18 N. State. The existing terra cotta facade of the hotel will be restored and a 21-story addition will be built to accommodate a 216-room luxury boutique hotel. The lower level will have a "food and beverage component" and the hotel lobby. Work is expected to begin later this year.

It's in the "Never Built, On Hold, and Visionary Projects" forum, since it's officially on hold. It's still a pretty active thread, especially for that forum, so it usually appears as the top thread and you can see it on the front page to the right of the forum link.
