Looking at i_am_hydrogen's photo (above), it occurs to me that 300 N. LaSalle's massing strategy is very, very close to that of the AT&T building.

Getting better with the HDR Harry.

Here is an interesting (or at least i found it interesting) article that was in the LA Times. It's not exactly on-topic but I think the regular viewers here would find this to be an interesting read. Hope you don't mind Steely. Actually, it might be a good idea to start a new thread like " CHICAGO | General Discussion" or something where we can talk about current events and whatever else that isn't development related.

^ honte, what's the story on this one?

A look at the facade...looks like a pretty curious patchwork...
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&ge...,128.16122278261446,,0,-24.0308825157822

Is this a demolition or restoration?

Complete demolition. This had been a cage hotel for the last 80 years or so. The city put out an RFP for redevelopment and in 2004 chose Northern Realty and some of the State Place team. It's taken so long to do the acquisition and demo, though, that I have my doubts that Northern's residential project there will proceed any time soon.

I haven't found much info on the building itself. It looks like it might date from the late 1870s, and may have been built as the Bennett Hospital.

Interesting. Yeah, it looked like a post-Fire building to me, albeit many stages from its 'original' state. Do you have any info on the proposed residential replacement? Does the redevelopment include this building, the 1 story building to the south, and the parking lot to the north?

Just the parking lot to the north and the New Ritz Hotel building. The old dry cleaners, now a Hilti dealership, is not included. I wasn't able to attend the public meeting where plans and renderings of the residential project were shown, but that was three years ago. I doubt that anything will happen for several more years, and it will probably be with different developers.

Every aspect of the project - including the facade - has been planned so as to provide the greatest aesthetic enjoyment to its residents, as well as John Q. Public. There is NO brick, precast, or exposed concrete on the facade - whoever has been disseminating that info is egregiously wrong - it is all aluminum and glass unitized curtainwall, which (for the laymen out there) is the Rolls Royce of building enclosure systems. The building has a heated saline swimming pool, an indoor movie theatre/screening room, a full gym, rooftop pool deck with cabanas, 3 barbeques, a fully landscaped green roof, a party room 600' above grade on the 53rd floor, and every creature comfort a resident (or guest) could want....

^ Funny, it's a small change, but we all like it better. I like the system and color of Parkview West a whole lot, but it's nice not to see it repeated so soon and in such close proximity.

Yeah, an unfortunate one that has been on tap for a long while. I was sad to see the demo had started when I drove past a few days back.

The building definitely was no later than the late 1870s. It had a very curious Joliet Limestone facade done in Victorian Gothic style, which to my knowledge is the only such surviving structure in Chicago. Most of these early post-fire (or prefire) Joliet facades were Italianate in style.

Joliet Limestone has some unfortunate characteristics, especially in today's harshly polluted environment. It tends to "melt," or lose detail, over time, and this building had a very bad case of this issue. In addition, the base had been altered and there were other things wrong. Add to that the fact that the city wanted it gone and issued the RFP, and the writing was on the wall. This is not to say that a very enlightened buyer couldn't have restored it, but the odds of doing anything for the building outside of that were very limited. Hopefully something decent will replace it - something far better than the Lowenberg or WOW stuff that has filled in south State and South Wabash.

Speaking of, does anyone know what's the story with the balconies on 2 E 8th? I believe I saw that they were all having significant repairs done. Such a new structure shouldn't be having problems so soon.

the change from brick is no small change. It makes a world's difference, and is a much more pedestrian friendly.

What will make 465 N Park Drive the "Highest end rental apartment building in the history of Chicago"?

I have a hard time buying that
