Keeping Inline with the Rest of Ontario: Hamilton Approves New Set of Parking Fines
HAMILTON, ON – July 7, 2008 – Hamilton is moving ahead with increased parking fines to keep inline with fine rates in the rest of the province. These new fines take effect today (July 7, 2008) and fall under the Provincial Offences Act.
“It is important to distinguish between fines and fees; what is going into effect today is an increase in parking fines not the fees for parking meters,” says Marty Hazell, Director of Parking and By-law Services, “Fine increases are not unique to Hamilton, across the province and in the United States you will also see parking fine increases.”
Fines are categorized into two groups: Early Payment option and Set Fine. Early Payment Fines will increase anywhere from $7.00 - $60.00 whereas some of the new Set Fines will remain the same with smaller increases ranging from $3.00 - $25.00. The highest fine increases of $60.00 (early payment) and $25.00 (set fine) only pertain to stopping or parking at signed fire routes.

“The City of Hamilton enforces over 80 different parking violations. It is important to be knowledgeable about these violations and the best place to review these violations is by searching through the City's by-laws. If you don't park illegally you will not be affected by this,” says Hazell.
