I live in Coal Harbour condo, and a notice was recently posted on our lobby bulletin board which said that The Shangri-La crane will be removed on July 12. Georgia St. from Burrard to Pender will be closed that day. No mention of how the crane will be removed. The purpose of the notice was to alert residents in Coal Harbour that traffic in the neighbourhood that day would be heavier than usual because of the traffic diversion. Too bad I'll be in Japan and won't be able to see it!

FINALLY! I'm glad there is finally a date for when they are going to take down the crane because I was wondering if they were ever going to take it down.

I also noticed that when you click on "front view" on their webcam, it finally looks up at the building rather than at it's base. This is much better.

Pender goes perpendicular to Burrard and is two blocks down from Georgia.

Just to lift up two cranes they need to close that many blocks?

I'm still a fan of the Helicopter.

Umm...in case you've never driven through downtown vancouver, pender does intersect georgia at the beginning...I would think thats where georgia would be closed from.

Exactly, Nathan. Pender intersects Georgia on a diagonal just around Cardero, I think. To close Georgia for such a long distance (from the Pender intersection to Burrard) is overkill isn' it? Just for the Shangri-La crane??!!

They usually have a long queue of flatbed trucks in order to remove a tower crane of this size.

While they probably don't need to close all of Georgia to Pender, the City probably prefers to funnel traffic down Pender rather than have eastbound traffic turning off Georgia onto Jervis, Broughton, etc causing unneccessary traffic jams (beyond what it is going to be like already).

A little tidbit for everyone, The building is reponsible for the planting of 57,000trees to offset the carbon dioxide of building it.

Wow, I didn't know Westbank did that, good on em. They should really try and publicise things like that more, developers get a really bad rep, some of whom do not deserve it.

Not to impugn Westbank's contribution...but how much did this really cost them, maybe they're just little seedlings....maybe they only spent $20,000.

Thanks for the updated pics guys. The Shangri-La has done wonders to the skyline and with the additions of Fairmont, The Georgia and Ritz-Carlton the skyline will even be more impressive. I think Vancouver is ready for a super tall. Just get rid of the height restrictions and work around certain view cones for one 1000ft tower

I'm sure Nimbys could live with that.

Can we get some more details about the crane liftdown Saturday. How many flatbed trucks will be needed? 20? How many cranes will be lifted up?

Where will be the best vantage point to watch this procedure? Is this a bigger operation than the takedown for Wall Center?
