Rees, and many of his blog followers, are very much against the Canada Line. Rees has been very vocal against Skytrain, and has had some tough words for TransLink.

Well, Stephen Rees, Malcolm Johnston and others argue that SkyTrain technology is wasteful, and that instead the region should embrace LRT. And you'll remember that recently, they and Patrick Condon and others were trying to quash SkyTrain to UBC in favour of a streetcar.

I don't agree with either of them, by the way. In my opinion, the SkyTrain is a huge success.. just look at the number of people who use it at any given time.

And a streetcar to UBC would be laughable. It would probably be faster to walk to West Point Grey than that.

Yep I agree. If you look around, everyone agrees that London or NYC have the best systems. Guess what Skytrain is the same as those subway systems. Of course it costs a lot more when you build it 100 years later, but that's life.

That's just the thing. You're not just building a system for today -- you are building it for the next several decades. Look at the investment NYC or even Toronto made in their systems -- and now they have the infrastructure to support high population growth.

Thanks to inflation and other factors, there's a good chance it'll be much cheaper to build infrastructure now than, say, 30 years from now.

CityTV reported this morning that the Canada Line is ahead of schedule and could open in the summer of 2009 ("a year from now" rather than November 2009). They also said that Waterfront Station is slated to be completed by Feb 2009 and we'll soon see test trains on the Richmond segment.

Good for "on time on budget" BS, but everytime I see the length of the platforms I cringe.

cool - kind of expected re the earlier opening

i think they purposefully made it longer than expected so they could see hey we got it done early

they were months behind on the m line and probably wanted to avoid that again so they covered their a** and gave themselves some room in case

The P3 nature of this project has nothing to do with short platforms. What it has to do with is RAVCO setting the capacity requirement at 15000 pphpd. It would be foolish to expect a company to build you a system that could handle 25000 pphpd when the financial arrangements reflect a 15000 pphpd system. If you buy a Honda from a car dealer, dont be upset if they dont give you a Ferrari instead.

Officedweller, did CityTV give any source for their "early completion date" rumour? I'm curious where it came from. I'm supposed to keep hush-hush about things like this, otherwise I would have told you guys about it a while ago.

Canada Line construction ahead of schedule

Wednesday, July 02 - 07:32:00 PM Erin Loxam

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - This fall, many of our roads will be getting back to normal as Canada Line construction is finishing up ahead of schedule. But, we're over a year away from actually traveling the line.

According to Steve Crombie with InTransit BC, the company building the Canada Line, everything has to be up and running by November 30th, 2009, but they expect ridership to begin sooner. Crombie says people will see continue to see road work in areas where the line is already completed because the city is doing additional streetscape. He adds that in the upcoming months, those giant holes cut into downtown, will disappear, "Around September for Vancouver City Centre, around November for Yaletown and around February for Waterfront."

Crombie says that the new Waterfront station will take longer because they have to do underground work connecting it to the existing one.

In addition to much of the construction finishing up, Crombie explains that people will actually see the trains, "So far we've been running trains on the guideway from our operations and maintenance centre in Bridgeport over to the airport. Starting in September, we'll start running trains along the elevated guideway down no.3 road, so that'll be the next significant sight for people to see. "

^ me thinks the Canada Line will be in operation in early-September, in time for the new school year. That still counts as summer, right? A June/July opening is way too early.

I'm thinking tree houses and bomb shelters......unfortunately, the bomb shelters won't be London's Underground.

We could start placing bets pretty soon on the opening date. I'll pick Monday August 17th.

Well, I happen to know their target opening date, so you're on!

Of course, then I would have to spill the beans, which I'm not allowed to do. Damn!
