Canadian TV in general is pretty white bread. I will give CTV credit though for taking a chance on airing cable TV drama's in primetime uncut, like Nip/Tuck. That show is pretty crazy, it's been on the air for a few years now...

Thunder Bay Televisions parent advisory board decided not to air Nip/Tuck, and replaced it with something else.

They also axed The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Family Guy, American Dad, and took a while to begin airing Desperate Housewives. Ah, prudes.

And yet This Is Your Day and 100 Huntley Street continue unabated?! What the —?!

And if CBC or CTV decide to air a movie that they don't agree with, we get two hours of infomercials for the Magic Bullet, The Best of Country, and Custom Family Bibles.

It's been less than ten years since they started airing advertisements from organizations other than The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and War-Amps.

C-R-A-Z-Y! I'm kind of glad that Edmonton now has corporate owned stations only... It kind of prevents this kind of localized censorship...

Yes, if it wasn't for local news coverage I'd say get rid of them altogether.

Dougall Media is always getting in trouble though. It's only a matter of time before the CRTC dissolves them and gives CBC and CTV control of the stations. CTV will probably become part of the former MCTV system, we'll probably get CKND or CIII for Global and CBC will probably stay the same. As long as we maintain our local news. It's one of the best in the country. No sensationalizing and it has good coverage. Sure, the production values are low (Seriously, if you have Satellite, watch tonight's TBT Neuss at 6 and see for yourself what a joke these people can be!) but it's content level is good for a small market TV station in this era.

A better solution might be to make CHFD a full affiliate of CTV, get rid of it's Global programming and set up a repeater of CIII or CKND. That way they would have to air more of CTVs schedule. They've actually threatened to do stupid things if Shaw continued airing CIII and I think they wanted Bell and Starchoice to block other channels from the market on Satellite! They're really eccentric there.

And the control they have over CFQK/CKED is more than questionable. The CRTC said that they were to have no influence over it at all yet not only do they control its marketing, they actually claim it as part of their company! It recently became a country station. It'll be a Hot AC station again in about a year though. I can't even get its signals on my radio.

The US has more private affiliates. CHFD (Thunder Bay, owned by Dougall Media, a local company), CJBN (Kenora, owned by Shaw), and CITL (Lloydminster, owned by Newfoundland Capital) are the only privately owned stations in the CTV Network. All others are owned directly by CTV itself.

In the case of CBC, it has more private affiliates, and most of them air the least amount of programming they can. CKPR airs almost none of CBC's arts programming and doesn't include much of its weekend schedule either, aside from sports. CBC still owns most of its stations, though.

Global owns all of its stations outright. Other stations will buy rights to their programming but they are not affiliated. (All three of NWOs TV stations do this; for a while, CJBN and CHFD aired a majority of Global content.)

I'm getting pissed off at that mind numbing commercial for Maple Leaf 'Simply Fresh Pasta Shakers' with the incredibly void and stupid women at the Eaton Centre talking about how easy it is to shake and how it didn't even confuse them at all! They make a strong case for violence against women.

(Just kidding, but myyy God)

anyone see that DioGuardi Tax Lawyer commercial? They show little men dressed up in shades and suits, popping out of envelopes and computers, with that dumb-— whispery song.. "here I come, TAX man" or something.. it sounds like — music.

This is probably not the thread to ask this question, but I'm curious to know when telemarketers phone your home do you get a 3-5 second delay before those weasels start yakking?

I think it's the delay where their computer (complete with pre-emptive response phrases) connects to your phone line. I have an unpronouncable last name, so I let them try to tackle it.. and laugh.

Then I say 'he's not in, I'm just the butler.'

yes that's usually what I say. I usually say that I'm housekeeping, or I'm a friend. In fact the other day some teleM dude called and went on a long explanation about Radio polling and finally asked me if I was Mr. xyz, when I said that I wasn't (even though I was) he went on anyways! I gave him a fake name "Alex Goldfarb" a portemanteau of the first name of my sports idol and the last name of a friend of mine. Damn him! I'm expecting his polling cahier in two weeks addressed to those names!

^You could also try the "hang on, I'll get them" and then just leave the phone there for twenty minutes and hang it up later. But that's mean, and I'd never do something bitter, deceptive and petty.

I did that a while ago, I don't remember why it didn't stick, but I guess it didn't make the cut.

(Is that racist? I'm sorry. )

Is there a worse commercial on TV right now than the one where the lady orders a McDonald's thing at a fancy restaurant?

No, no there is not.
