Just bought tix for the Sled Island concerts at Shaw Millennium Park the 27-28... Of Montreal, Tegan and Sara, Broken Social Scene, Mogwai... two days are $125. There are tons of shows at venues all over DT/Beltline, including Chad VG at the science museum.

High-time this thread name get's changed to "Alberta Summer Music Festivals"

I wish I wasn't busy on the weekend of Sled Island! That lineup points to a great fest. You folks down in Calgary are LUCKY. Support this stuff. For one, it'll take the sting out of the mixed fan/media reactions to Virgin. More importantly, this fest has unrivaled potential to become legendary as the years progress.

Another fest I actually hope to make it out to is South Country Fair later in July down in Fort Macleod. They confirmed Geoff Berner recently, saw his show last year @ the Powerplant in Edmonton and he was hilarious. Leeroy Stagger is also gonna be there, amongst others.

The best shows just went past, those being Nightwish and Dream Theater, and of course, Maiden. I wish Symphony X would come to Calgary.

So is anyone going to V-Fest this weekend?

I'm going to try and listen to some of it from my place, we actually have a pretty good view of the stage from the podium. I'm just not sure which way it is facing, any idea?

Damn, that is facing away from me then. Probably will only make out bass and nothing else when it is going.

there's a map on http://www.virginfestival.ca/calgary/ that shows the site layout. i thought the second stage might face you but it looks like it faces north as well.

35,000 tickets? If that's true it must be amazing.

I had to laugh at the news last night about the "police presence" on Virgin site. It must be a HUGE relief to deal with drunk concertgoers considering what they have to contend with in that area normally. If I lived in the East Village I'd be jumping for joy at the crackheads being outnumbered, for once. They should have more events at Ft Calgary.

Yo la tengo is playing a separate show at the Pumphouse too. I'd kill to go but money is tight these days.

I'd like to go to, but the my cheap accountant mind will not let me pay to see the same concert twice since I am going to the Friday night show.

I am sure the Pumphouse show will be better - intimate atmospheres always are superior.

V-Fest was freaking awesome! The hip are easily the best Canadian band, and the most entertaining. Matt Good, City and Colour and Ten Second Epic were all awesome as well. I figured the show would be sub par, but our Canadian acts made it well worth the price of admission.

Anybody see the segment on Global News? That guy complaining about the horrible noise is the most stereotypical NIMBY possible. It was great!

I was laughing by the time the story was over. For those who missed it, it was a guy who lives in Bridgeland complaining that the noise levels were offensive. He's over 1km from Fort Calgary, across a major arterial road, and under the flight path of the airport, yet still did the interview complaining about the noise while sitting outside his house looking to the south over the river. I could understand if it was something that was going on for days on end, but seriously its just a weekend. He also brought up the fireworks and such from stampede, and even the police dance that is held at Fort Calgary to try to explain whats acceptable and not.

Yeah I saw that too. The funniest part was when he said "that noise kept me up 'till 20 to 11 last night."

What a —.
