The next layer of beams are going up as we speak. Floors 3 and 4 I believe.

Steel beams are already reaching as high as five stories!

Definitely fun to watch. I remember them saying that building code allows them to build up 6 stories of steel above the last story of concrete flooring, so it will probably go up to 6 stories fast, then not any higher while they pour concrete, then another growth spurt. Or maybe they will pour concrete and add steel concurrently making for a slower more constant growth in hight after they get this first part done. It doesn't really matter on way or the other, it is just fun to watch.

It was fun to watch. I was there around noon just chilling and watching some of the steel beams go into place. I even took some pics.

A new level of steel beams are getting put up. Crews working on floors 3 and 4.

LOL, Yea that beam looked like it was next to go up, but it was just sitting there the whole time. I'm sure it will go up soon.

T-Mac: More T & N--thanks and nice pics. I especially like the shot from the corner of the Walker Cntr., with the steel beams juxtaposed against the American Towers. It provides great perspective.

This one is really moving quickly. It is amazing how fast they can go with the steel. When I was down there yesterday, it was really cool to see all the activity and the sounds associated with a large highrise under construction.

so... we have under one year left on this baby.

and the developer said 18 months for construction time after groundbreaking, so that opening date sounds about right.

It's a sign of the economic times: The market for office space is softening in Salt Lake County after several gangbuster years.

If you're a business looking to expand or relocate in Salt Lake County, you may find more alternatives now for office space and landlords willing to work with you.

"We've had three phenomenal years on office leasing. This year, we're primarily flat," said Scott Wilmarth, senior vice president of CB Richard Ellis.

Wilmarth says the office-vacancy rate increased by about 2 percentage points this year to 13.5 percent. But he says there's still high demand for office space downtown, especially as the new high-rise is built on Main Street.
"Suburban marketplace is adding a million square feet of new construction. Downtown has not had a new downtown high-rise for 10 years," Wilmarth said.

He says the worsening economy of the nation is affecting the better economy of Salt Lake County.

222 South Main should of broke ground a year or two ago when the economy hot. Oh well, better late then never.

I agree that it should have broken ground a while back but I guess better late then never.

I think one good think about it is that DT vacancy is still less than 10% if I'm not mistaken, and is anticipated to remain near or below 10% even when 222 is completed. Although the article stated that SLC economy is slowing it is all relative. Slowing in SLC compaired to slowing in a rust belt city is a big difference. SLC has traditionally had one of the stronger fastest growing economies in the country, so a slow down in economic growth in SLC would be a welcome amount of growth in cities like Cleveland, Detroit and Buffalo, to name a few.

I anticipate that the economy will improve mid - late 2009, and considering Utah's economy traditionally fares much better than the national average it could be mid year at the latest. The turn around in the economy, the progress of CCC and the shifting of national trends back to urban centers will be a huge benefit for DT SLC.

With 222 near or below a 10% vacancy, the growth turn around in the economy and the shift, I don't think 222 will be the newest office tower kid on the block for very long. I wouldn't be surprised to hear an announcement in early 2010 of a new office building, and ground being broken in 2010 as well. Maybe it will be the Cowboy project on State and 100 S. or WTC on 200 S or we can all hope for something on the parking lot of 400 S and State.
