^What did you see occurring at the site? That one totally slipped off my radar. It's a very important project in terms of location.
They are putting up the covered scaffolds on the street next to the sidewalk
for pedestrians to walk under. They started earlier in the week. Saw them when I was walking home from the Clark/Lake CTA station yesterday evening.
This morning when I went by at 10am or so, workmen were continuing to build them. These are the type where they fill the space between the plywood with concrete, just like at Waterview.

Did anyone go to this meeting yesterday or know the results?
I know the lots on both sides of NBC Tower have been discussed before, but I was wondering if anyone has had any interest in building anything in those parking lots? I heard a rumor a while ago that NBC or some other network might be thinking about putting another tower in one of those plots? It was just something I heard from word of mouth but was wondering if there might be any fact to it?
Even though I have high hopes for this building, we can start to see the proportions of the parking podium in that last photo
and it seems kind of prisonish
but if those slats rise on the same slope as the garage ramp
this could be exactly the kind of asthetically pleasing functional expressionism I've been waiting so long to see in a parking podium.
based on the two renderings, the garage slats behave exactly how you want them to. And I agree, the building looks very good
Thanks for the info. Not sure I liked either of those so its a good thing they never got built. I would like to see something with similar architecture as NBC Tower. Its ashame NBC doesnt look into putting another tower up, I think Chicago is becoming more popular for shows and things of that sort?
Dana Hotel. I think this refreshing in the middle of that sea of shit. It looks good from State Street, too. Whether intentional or not, it's got a kind of Brutalist look I'm surprised to see revived.

If you go to the Central Post Office (open 24 hours) and go to the second floor by the PO Box collection window, you can see the parking ramp "slats" clearly. They are already doing this, and it looks fine to me, although not particularly novel.

Sea of shit indeed. Almost every high rise around the Dana Hotel is garbage. Still doesn't hold a candle to Hong Kong. Does anyone know what the deal is with that porthole on the top right?

it's not exactly novel, but the way that the slabs between each floor are treated as if they were one contiguous ribbon is much more expressive of the circulation of most parking garages.
If it is just left as painted concrete, with no detailing within the void or on the edge of the ribbon, it could fall short and be just a one liner that is as brutal and uninspiring as the parking lot that had been at 300 N lasalle. Which expressed it's horizontal function, but was just a structurally efficient garage.
A garage that admits it has ramps and incorporates them in the design will always look better than those that pretend the parking podium is just more floors. Trump and Waterview come to mind, Trump making a show of the ramp and Waterview trying to conceal them.

JHC has the best kind of parking - parking I never noticed. Walked there many times, coming from N LSD we even went past the ramps a few times, I only remember them invoking old (very old) memories of using the ramps, I can't remember what they looked like from the outside.
But we stray - there is a thread for parking podiums - The one at 225 W VanBuren is not making an impact above the trees as of today, I am holding my opinion on the street level presence until it is done and occupied.
