Wow... I was just complaining to a friend a week ago about how Google hadn't put up Streetview in Huntsville yet, and I even checked on Monday and it still wasn't there. I like the Streetviews b/c sometimes Google's satellite imagery is VERY old... case in point: look at Chapman Mountain-- that was taken in April 2002. It's probably more useful for tourists than us locals.

It's like what was said above, Google won't update this for another 2, 3 years at the least. I have no problems with that.

Another downtown bridge planned, similar to the one on Monroe and works very well. This will make it possible to walk from the courthouse square
to the Constellation project without crossing a road.

Church Street bridge, museum on council list

Two items on the Huntsville City Council's agenda tonight will set in motion noticeable changes for Big Spring International Park.

One measure provides part of the money for the Huntsville Museum of Art expansion.

The other paves the way for the design of an arched bridge along Church Street where the Big Spring flows to the lagoon.

Also on the agenda is a zoning change that would put time limits on the use of portable storage units delivered to homes.

The council will meet at 6 p.m. in City Hall downtown.

The museum expansion is getting $2 million from the city. The council tonight will be asked to approve a budget amendment that commits the money from a special tax district. The $2 million will be coupled with money raised by the museum to build an expansion that will include an auditorium, new exhibit space, sculptor garden and other features.

Clayton Bass, president and CEO of the Huntsville Museum of Art, said construction could begin by September and could take about a year to complete. "We hope to open the new expanded facilities hopefully in November 2009," he said. Bass said the museum has raised about $10 million so far toward the expansion, an endowment and money for exhibits.

The bridge project was discussed briefly Wednesday at a meeting of the Metropolitan Planning Organization. U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer, D-Huntsville, secured $980,000 in federal money for the design and engineering of a bridge over Church Street that will allow pedestrians to cross underneath.

Mayor Loretta Spencer said the project will tie both sides of Big Spring International Park together. "It's a wonderful safety issue," she said. Assistant City Planner Steve Dinges said the bridge will cost about $4 million but construction will not start until about 2010.

It would better if grass could be put where Church street is now, and a tunnel could be built for the cars to drive underneath. That way the actual green space of the park could be expanded.

Or even better, shut the whole road off and plant grass.

A bridge for cars has another drawback. It's going to be unsightly to see cars driving at elevated level through the park.

(My guess is they'll come to their senses in about 30 years, by demolishing the bridge and implementing my suggestion).

Yeah, the developers announced it at least 3 years ago; I remember because the announcement was overshadowed by a hurricane making landfall on the Gulf Coast. There haven't been any official announcements on the project since, but I did find some renderings of a project called "Indian Creek" last year (blog article) And since there hasn't been any word on whether or not it has been scrapped, I left it on the map if it reappears someday.

Education sales tax flopis putting the county indire economic condition

What now? Madison County school leaders have been asking that question since a proposed education sales tax flopped at the polls. The June 3 referendum wasn't close, with 64 percent of voters rejecting the tax.

It's a major setback for all three school systems in Madison County, the military having told each to prepare for a flood of children as the Pentagon ships thousands of jobs to Redstone Arsenal. The systems' $200 million-plus construction and renovation plan will have to be scaled back considerably.

An article today discussing the airline woes on Huntsville International.
So far the imapct has been minimal, with Allegiant dropping service but no other changes in service as of yet, mainly due to the business nature of the
air travel out of the airport. Business travel is 68% with the number 1 market being Washington D.C.. Continental did not cancel any flights from Huntsville to Houston.
Through May passenger traffic is 525,946 up 9.5% from the same time last year. Huntsville's carriers ranking..

1. Delta
2. US Air
3. American, Continental, Northwest, United.

The biggest change affecting everyone is the huge increase in ticket prices
due mainly to fuel costs.

New lampposts, benches, sidewalks are being installed

The Five Points facelift is beginning to take shape.

Work crews have been carving out sidewalks, relocating utilities and preparing the heart of the commercial area for benches and lampposts in a $1.4 million makeover on the east side of the intersection.

Work began March 28 and is scheduled for completion Sept. 10, according to Tanika Dorsey Lindsey in the city Engineering Department.

A second phase calls for sidewalks, landscaping and traffic signal improvements on the west side of Andrew Jackson Way along Holmes Avenue to Dement Street.

The Five Points recommendations stemmed from a $5,000 city-funded study in 2001 by Auburn University's Center for Architecture and Urban Studies

So I go to eat @ Five Guys Burgers and Frys for lunch today. And I notice they are putting in a New Balance store! Its right in between five guys and jasons deli off University dr. I love NB's,so I know I will begoing there alot!

5 Guys will spoil you, just a simple hamburger but as fresh as it can get, nothing frozen and the frys are fresh cut.

The strange thing is 5 Guys is it's owned by people who don't believe in eating beef. Kind of weird making living on something that is against your religion. Guess eating the beef is against their religion and not serving it up.

Are you sure, do you mean the local franchise owner?

Local restaurateur and visionary Kumar Patel is the franchisee for Five Guys. He introduced Nothing but Noodles to town, while also operating the Schlotzsky's sandwich shops.
