Remove the top, and it was nothing more than an eyesore...
But even as a whole, I think it was "ok" at best...

I disagree. Paint the bottome a rust color and paint the window frames white and it would've been an awesome looking old building. In the early 80's there was a big preservation brewhaha in San Antonio... a bank wanted to build a 30-story building on the site of the old Majestic Theatre. They ended up preserving the facade and built a 13-story sister building on top of it. (The 30-story tower never got built.)
Personally, I think that the old 50 West building would be a great facade to build a building out of. In a lot of cases, ie Hearst, you keep the old facade but the transition between old building and new tower is weird. But this one has a flow to it that makes me think it would serve as a fine base to a building. But no tears lost here, Jahn delivered.
Time Equities' 50 West Street is set to break ground on June 23.
The $600 million hotel and residential building designed by Helmut Jahn will occupy 580,000 square feet and will reach 66 stories.
The tower will also provide a passageway for pedestrians, linking the southern part of Battery Park City to Wall Street and Rector Street's retail corridor. Completion of the building is expected in 2010.
"The groundbreaking is important because this building had a lot of public involvement to create the urban plaza to connect Battery Park City with the core of the Financial District," said Phillip Gesue, director of acquisitions and development for Time Equities.
Nice tower. It's amazing what a huge impact this tower would have on any skyline in the US (or the world, for that matter) with the exception of NYC (and if you include the world, I suppose Hong Kong could be included.) 700' of filler,
To compliment NYGuy's Downtown's tallest residentials, here are the 5 tallest office towers under construction or with construction imminent. Does not include 5wtc (Deutsche Bank Site) since there are no clear propolsals for the site yet.
