One of the worst features, not just of the C-Line trains, but also for E/M-line ones, is the total absence of the overhead ring bars. I totally DO NOT understand why our Skytrain cars don't have it. If you're not standing close to seats or bars, how the hell can you balance yourself when the train is stopping/accelerating etc? This is never a problem for HK MTR because they ALL have them.

It'll probably be worse for the C-Line trains because it's wider. Translink should've ordered the cars to have overhead bars. Can both Rotem/MKI and II trains be fitted with those in the future?

I have been wondering: are the "pocket" doors on the Canada Line better for noise reduction? Even while on a Mark II, going through the cut-and-cover tunnel between Columbia and Sapperton is a very unpleasant experience due to the noise. I could not imagine having to endure that for 15 straight minutes aboard the Canada Line.

Most subway trains around the world have thick walls for insulation....the trains in Hong Kong have walls at least twice as thick as the Mark II trains. I don't know about the Canada Line.

I did some research and have my own document from INTRANSITBC so here goes:
MK1...80 cap, seated 35. Therefore current 4 car trains...320 cap, 140 seats
MK11..130 cap, seated 44. Therefore current 2 car trains..260 cap, 88 seats
Rotem..160 cap, seated 55 Therefore current 2 car trains..320 cap, 110 seats

Therefore if all trains are full station lengths {includes 50 metres stations for Canada Line as 4 already are and all are built for easy expansion}....
6MK1..480 cap, 210 seats, 4MK11..520 cap, 172 seats, 3Rotem..165,seat 480

I hope that makes it easier for future comparisons.

I would imagine that the Rotems have a higher crush load capacity, as there is more room in the centre aisle.

How much you wanna bet that out of all the train lines, the RAV line will be the first to run fold-up seats only down the sides and make the train for standees during the rush?

I wouldnt like fold up seats, but I wish they would just have side seating, its so much more practical, especially due to the fact that the Canada Line's end-to-end time is under 30 minutes, meaning a great majority of people will not be on the train for more than 10-15 minutes, so its not unreasonable for them to stand.

something like this (sorry bad picture, i took it with my old phone, which had a messed up camera from falling in a puddle)

Couple of Vancvouver City Centre Station observations -
- There's now a large opening from the plaza down to the mall level - under the white canopy/tent. You can see a huge concrete beam that they'll probably have to remove to install the escalators.
- The opening into Vancouver Centre (into the former Regis Framing space by my guess) from the ticket level is progressing - exploratory holes have been drilled through and slabs should be cut out soon.

Research??? Don't we all know these numbers already? Haven't I been telling you this repeatedly at SSC???

Probably, but people here don't really know how to "crush" like at other major cities.....and the crush capacity is kinda useless when you've got nothing to hold to!!!

The row seating arrangement was a huge mistake.

This is due, in part to the design and width of Skytrain cars. If you're in a Skytrain, you don't want to get stuck in the middle area. It's barely wider than an airplane aisle. That and the vestibule between cars on MkII trains.

The Rotems are wider so there is more open movement and less aversion to being pushed deeper into the train. This is even further improved by removing seats or setting them transversely.

The one good thing about the current seating arrangement... is that they can be changed. This would instantly add capacity without spending more on more cars. I think SNC/Lavalin didn't have much choice as to the seating, because they wanted to encourage as many as possible to ride the train.

OLYMPIC VILLAGE STATION....tunnel fans

I'm don't know where tunnel fans are usually located in subway systems, but with the tunnel fans being located behind a wall next to the platforms for all of the Canada Line underground stations, would you hear the tunnel fans while waiting for a train at the platform?

With that said, I'm sure it wouldn't be exactly like standing next to a leaf blower....but I do find it intriguing.

Not sure how fast they would be spinning - I doubt they would need to go really fast since the trains also push air.

From the Busby website:

Busby Perkins+Will has been commissioned to design three stations for the Richmond portion of the new Canada Line transit system, an elevated line running parallel to No. 3 Road. Aberdeen Station, Lansdowne Station, and Richmond-Brighouse Station will be designed as a family, united by similarities in structure, glazing, and roof elements.

The stations will be fully glazed to encourage inward and outward visibility. Platforms will be accessible primarily via stairs and escalators, with transparent elevators providing wheelchair access. On the platforms, extensive use of glass will create a visual connection with the surrounding area. Distinctive wooden roofs will provide weather protection for the length of the platform, and will clearly identify the stations as part of the Canada Line's Richmond segment.

Each station has been concieved as a catalyst for future development, and has been designed to complement its envisioned surroundings. Aberdeen will support mixed-use commercial development, Richmond-Brighouse will serve a large-scale urban project, and Lansdowne will be surrounded by a large-scale park and plaza. Strategic daylighting will ensure that future development does not reduce the level of daylight brought into the stations, and rooftop rainwater collection will be incorporated into landscape design features. Other opportunities to incorporate sustainable principles are being pursued as designs progress.

wow, the first two look pretty —....thanks!

But the wood they used in the renderings isn't exactly the same.....too bad they didn't use Braid Station's cherry wood. That wood tone and texture would've been awesome.

Aberdeen Station.....IKEA??

In the future will they be able to lift the single track portion of the line off the pylons and drop a dual track line on top???

you cant just "lift and drop", and AFAIK the line is not being designed with a replaceement in mind, You would have to shut down that segment of the line for months (maybe even over a year). There is also the issue as to whether the pylons on the single track section are compatible - they are about the same size (though slightly different in shape). You would also have to rework Richmond-Brighouse station I imagine. Even after construction, you have to do train testing and all that buissness.

Short answer: yes, but it would be expensive and you would have to shut down that section for quite a whole.

Noticed that too. It's probably going to fade overtime: everytime I see it, the colours seem to be a little different [darker], and it's not the weather either...
