Frank Gray is the new community, economic development chief in Salt Lake City

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,700233492,00.html

This guy sounds very promising

Urban planner Frank Gray has been on Salt Lake City's speed-dial for years — and in Rolodexes before that.
Now, calls seeking Gray's planning and redevelopment expertise will ring at City Hall.

...Gray is an "internationally known" planner, Becker said, credited with developing and implementing urban and redevelopment planning in communities throughout the U.S. and Europe.

..."He brings decades of experience and service," Becker said at a press conference outside the Salt Lake City-County Building.

...Gray has been serving as general manager of the department of planning and development services in Scottsdale, Ariz., since 2005. He previously was planning and development director for Lakewood and Boulder, Colo.; Petaluma, Calif.; and was deputy director for the city and county of Denver, with primary responsibility for the planning and economic development aspects of Denver's $2.5 billion new airport development project.

More on Univ. of Utah plan - U. of U. wants to become more walkable

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,700233481,00.html

seamus 2008

U of U wants to become more walkable
Associated Press:

...The master plan puts future construction in the heart of campus by connecting it to TRAX stations with features designed for pedestrians.

The new buildings will add 3.8 million square feet of space and require demolition of nearly 400,000 square feet in 16 obsolete buildings.

"Our campus is huge. It's just not walkable," says Randy Dryer, who helped lead the effort as board chairman. "The concept now is to make little pockets that are more concentrated and dense. That will bring people together, as opposed to this sprawl."

Planners want to get people out of their cars.

Development planned for Gale Street

A development is planned for Gale Street that will feature recreational space such as an ice-skating rink, golf-driving range or bowling alley, as well as movie theaters, indoor and outdoor retail space and condos.
Gale Street Properties LLC acquired the 7.9 acres at 529 S. Gale St. (340 West) from the Salt Lake Tribune on Dec. 31, according to documents from the Salt Lake County Recorder.

Goldman Sachs to double Salt Lake workforce

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,700233588,00.htm

In 2001, the company made the office into an operations hub for its existing business, moving functions from offices in New York, London, Zurich and Hong Kong to Salt Lake. Goldman Sachs Bank USA, the firm's industrial loan bank, is headquartered in Research Park.

The new jobs will include support for institutional asset management, derivatives, Goldman Sachs Bank USA and securities sales and trading.

Huntsman, in a prepared statement, said Goldman Sachs joins Procter & Gamble, ATK and Amer Sports among companies that have headquarters or major new facilities planned for Utah. "Utah's competitive tax structure, highly skilled work force and unparalleled quality of life provide a premier foundation for success," Huntsman said.

...the company is to add up to 375 jobs paying more than $75,000 annually, which is more than twice the Salt Lake County median salary of $32,828.

This is great news Viper. Boy, can that area use this or what!! I'm curious as to the developers project in Glendale, (Phoenix area) as it was quoted as the model for this project. Sounds very cool. This is the second big, recent announcement for the 500 south corridor, woohoo!!

I noticed that they have torn down the old board of education building just south of West High School on 300 West. This building was also just north of the Subway on 300 West and North Temple. Does anyone know if the board of education sold this property or what the plans are here. It used to house the school buses for the Salt Lake City School District.

See, in my mind, this owns CCC in terms of look. I wish Salt Lake had something like this, something a bit more adult looking.

This is what I found interesting:

Quote:
On Gale Street, the possible ice rink probably won't come with a professional hockey team, said the principal. The retail component will have indoor walkways to accommodate shoppers when it's cold.
Probably? As in, they could be looking at the possibility of bringing in a pro hockey team? Will the ice center be large enough for a future hockey team, or something like they have in Ogden?

I'd love to get an NHL team.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that they will NOT build an NHL level arena in this development. No way, no how. I would love the NHL here too, but I doubt they build an arena in advance, without having a franchise. That said, I like that project and if it is anything like Westgate, it'll be a fun place to visit.

Also, this development can't be too big as gale street is only one block. So this development will be one city block, which isn't much. Definitely won't be to the scale of Westgate.

Yeah, Salt Lake is never good enough to do that. So many other cities have built their arena prior to landing a team, but somehow Salt Lake can't manage it. It's weird, but oh well.

It doesn't need to be the size of Westgate, rather just have the same components. That whole area is depressing, with its ugly warehouses and vacant lots. If this entertainment center is a scaled down version of Westgate, with the same look, I think it'll be golden.

Really? You mean we don't have to try to save those warehouses?

You're Probably right, however there have been a few cities have done that in the past. They would go out on a limb and built a arena in advance and then a team would come. Salt Lake needs to grow some balls and try something like that. The old saying goes..."If you built it, they will come."

Gale Street

Guys,
they just built the E-center 10 years ago, anyways. The hockey arena is specific for the Arizona deal. It's hard to imagine a hockey team being popular in hot Arizona.

Also, a driving range?????!!!That was probably a misquote in the paper. I'm betting this development will be something like a mini-gateway that's geared to all those people staying in the nearby motels.

I drive by the Gale Street side every day going to and from work and have to admit that it is one of the few blocks in the city that I have actually really spent some time thinking about, "what would I do there?"

It's a great location right between 500 S and 600 S. with lots of traffic and exposure. I would love to see an active, sports oriented, type of a recreation center like Ogden has at The Junction. I also would love to see an ESPNZone. (I know that's probably wishful thinking.) I'm not familiar with the Westgate project in AZ. Is it a mixed-use facility? A residential component would do well.

It is only a single city block but all a neighborhood needs is a single catalyst. The 300 West corridor is certainly changing!

My one complaint about the block is all of the billboards. They have got to go.

As sports facilities go, I am completely biased, and would love to see an MLB franchise. Though I do not think that it is a good idea to utilize tax money to build on a hopeful premise.

While it will certainly be nice to see something done with the property on Gale St., after looking at the site plan for the AZ project, it seems like something much closer to Jordon Landing than CCC: Acres and acres of development on the city's fringe with no viable connection to public transit.
I'm not saying I hate it, but from a space planning perspective, Westgate, AZ is nothing I would want to see in Salt Lake City.

I drove past that block down 400w. on my way to school this past year and I think this project, if done right, is just what that area needs.
I took a Greyhound bus out to Colorado over Memorial Day weekend and coming back I realized that this part of town is the first part of Downtown SLC alot of visiters see. I'm hoping this development will be very visualy impressive and bring more vitiliy to that part of downtown.

You've got to remember, though, Phoenix is like 10 years behind Salt Lake in terms of public transit, so it's not much of a surprise that area isn't connected in any way to light rail.

This area in SLC, however, is only a stones throw away from a light rail station.

Frankly, anything would be an improvement over what is on the site in Salt Lake currently.
I'm just saying that I'm not ready to pile on the praise for what these guys have done in Glendale:

This is pretty much the same thing that has been done at Jordan Landing and the District. Push those buildings to the edge of the parking lot and you have a typical suburban shopping center.
Not exactly the walkable paradise that you see in their renderings.

I like the way that CCC "looks" and feel that its look will better fit in with its surroundings than the look of Westgate would. I would love, however, if the overall look of the Gateway were a little closer to what the renderings for Westgate look like; more lights, and generally more colorful and edgy. As it is, the Gateway is nothing more than bland suburban architecture on an urban scale.
