State Street Screwup

I was driving towards AS last night on State Street and they completely redid the intersection to where you could only make right turns.

—???

I thought we went through all that BS two years ago...

Yep, and from 16th Street, no more left turns (this has been on and off again). I think it's residential thing. Annoying though. Very annoying.

I was walking through Atlantic Station the other day and saw a sign that made me laugh out loud. Amongst all the scaffolding that was just put on the building with the Grape, there was a sign that said "Please Pardon our Progress."

Speaking of lack of progress, anyone know why it takes 9 months to open an H&M store in Atlantic Station, when the one that was announced a few months ago at North Point Mall is already opening next week. The arch is going up at a snails pace as well. Hopefully they can finish it before it needs to be repaired.

Well first of all, the H&M in AS will be the main store for right now, i.e. men;s women's, and children's clothing will be sold there. The one at Northpoint shall only focus on women's and children. If you haven't either been to Europe or a city with multiple H&Ms then I can understand your lack of comprehension of the concept. Most H&Ms that have all products are multi-story and therefore take a little longer to develop as opposed to specialty H&Ms.

Beyond that, the opening has been delayed by repairs to the building they're going in at Atlantic Station.

They sure picked a good time to cover the entire place with scaffolding covering up the outdoor seating for some of the restaurants. What a bunch of idiots!

Atlantic Station: Never time enough to do it right but plenty of time to do it over. This development breeds a new term... McUrban.

We can't all develop urban perfection like ThrashATL. The blame can only be placed on the contractors who did not do their jobs properly.

I look forward to comparing it with TOWN : Brookhaven next year.

Which plans to use more "local" tenants.

Jew...., I don't. The plans I have seen of Town:Brookhaven make Atlantic Station look like the Taj Mahal. It looks really cheap. However, I am glad they are getting a Costco because I hate driving to the Perimeter.

I think TOWN will be much better than Atlantic Station. But that would not be too hard.

This Sembler project needs a horse-load of re-tooling.
There are too many surface lots, and it needs to front 14th Street more.
And more AS grid integration, too many retaining walls.

AS —

Atlantic station should have been 100% carless barring the parking deck. Instead of trying to copy dense big cities with a grid street, they could have made it more like the Promenade in Santa Monica with brick streets and no cars. Instead of trying to copy NYC, they could have made it better.

my 2 cents about AS

So the promenade in Santa Monica is better than NYC? NYC is a great functional city, the promenade in Santa Monica is just a promenade...

I'm sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. In my opinion, making AS carless (I'm assuming you mean just the District) would add to the mall feel and keep it from feeling like an actual part of the city. It would feel much more artificial than it already does. I realize they do this on certain streets at certain times and I don't really like it then. Granted, it's a fairly small criticism compared to all of the missteps in designing and executing The District...don't get me started on "Central Park" or any of the other cheesy branding. Just my opinion.
