Downtown Phoenix Construction Update: May 1st, 2008

Foremost...we've got shades!

Convention Center bridge.

One Central Park East - Four floors done and core up to #8.

44 Monroe looking dense.

Exterior finishing up.

This looks much more massive in person - Cityscape excavation.

ASU Dorms with cladding.

Cronkite School exterior finishing up.

Every building, except one, is brand new. Pretty amazing.

Digging has started for the ASU Nursing II building.

Alta Phoenix picking up speed.

HX, thanks for the great update! I make out a single sun shade on the south face of the Sheraton. I take it that they have just begun the installation. That is a relief. I was concerned that they had run out of dough and were going to leave it flush. The shades will be both functional against the famous Phx sun and add some much needed dimension to that enormous falt wall. ASU DT is coming together nicely. Once the Civic Space and Nursing School building are completed, it will be like an actual campus. Having the dorms and Alta close together will add an infusion of youth and vibrant energy to the northern edge of the core...exciting times

I'm in love. Thanks for the post.

Bit off track - how tall is 44 Monroe with the crown? Asking because from a certain angle when walking downtown it looks taller than the white building next to it (forgetting the name of that one).

The northern area of downtown with OCPE, all of the ASU buildings, and eventually the park is going to be great.

I like the facade/cladding of the dorms.

The dorms and the Cronkite look real nice. Can't wait to see all the new projects in 10 days or so. I can finally judge the Sheraton for myself.

Semi-off topic question for anyone in the know:

How hard is it to reverse some of the bad re-facading that has taken place on older buildings? It is easy? is it too cost prohibitive? is the old facade too destroyed when it gets improved that it is impossible to bring it back? has this type of reversal/restoration happened anywhere else?

I'd love to see this building (and many others) in their original brick state:

That building is pretty hideous. Any kind of restorative remodeling would improve it.
