The Children's Museum looks classy, but that's not the quality I expected or wanted out of the building.

The only whimsical element in the entire thing is the cantilever (which, granted, is pretty cool) but there isn't even any color in the design....

Just because it looked like a hospital to me is not a shot at the architural style at least from my perspective [form follows function or better stated Convergent evolution].

The standard bearer of urban hospitals IMO is Northwestern hospital [Galter Pavilion] downtown. That is a hospital that many urban metros should try to emulate.

There is currently a massive expansion/replacement-hospital growth period in the Chicagoland area at this time. Several hospitals are under construction as we speak. The dollars are nothing to sneeze at, combined we are talking about billions of dollars in infrastructure alone. Not to mention that even a modest 250 bed hospital can employ in excess of 5000 jobs of which 1/2 are rather well paid.

it's taller than 10 stories, and outside of a few exceptions on the gauntlet, that's too tall in my book. burnham's dream was to have the ave lined with buildings that maintained a similar height...

imo, when you line the ave with a bunch of tall buildings, great buildings like allerton and masterpieces like hancock lose their significance.

this will become yet ANOTHER 900nmichigan, park tower, chicago place, and so on----> too tall.

Before i go ahead and post this i wanted to see if anyone has already beat me to it.

An updated version of the Central Station book written by Fogelson (sp?) was handed out to all residents of Museum Park developments a few weeks ago. There are som really interesting tid-bits in there along with renderings of the Gateway project (like 12-15 new high rises) from 14th to 22nd street over the metra electric tracks. If no one has seen this before, i'll post it. Otherwise, some other interesting facts..

- Frank Gehry was originally going to be the architect for at least one (or more) grant park towers on roosevelt.
- One of the earliest concepts for the central station area on roosevelt that was incredibly close to happening was a soviet-american trade center. The project collapsed along with the USSR. But not before Fogelson was taken to an undisclosed location in Russia to attend a super upscale dinner party. Contracts had already been signed before this concept fell apart.
- The large median down indiana ave was (is?) supposed to have a light rail track.
- Mayor Daley lives in Park Row
- There is a hillary rodham clinton park somewhere in the south loop

if anyone finds these interesting, i'll post a few more things i came across in the book. Otherwise, if this is old news, i'll be quiet.

Crate & Barrel is based in Chicago, as is Walgreen's and Garrett's (the popcorn place). There's probably others that don't spring to mind immediately. But yeah, duh, most of Michigan Avenue is clothing stores, and most good clothing brands are European (Cole Haan, incidentally, was founded in Chicago but is now owned by Nike).

But the real loss is the building, which will look like shit when it's obviously a parking garage on the side.

I'm not a huge Gehry fan but I'd be interested in seeing what he could do with the site (I don't really like GP3). And please do post it.

BP to move 1,000 jobs from suburbs to Merc complex

The oil company BP PLC tentatively has agreed to move 1,000 jobs from the western suburbs to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange complex at 10 to 30 S. Wacker.

......Schoenberg said CME will continue leasing the lower floor to retain the corporate headquarters at 20 S. Wacker. The huge open spaces on both floors will be redesigned to be suitable as offices, with new windows that overlook Wacker.
.......In its hunt for downtown space, BP had considered occupying a new building Fifield Cos. has proposed for 601 W. Monroe.

No new awesome green building which stinks. Hopefully Fifield can still get someone to lease in a new tallest west of the river.

No...the article says they will lease 240,000 square feet. The one floor was in reference to 35,000 square feet of space that they will occupy that is part of the old trading floors.

Well for a new tower to make sense, loop vacancies have to be low, so BP is doing their part by moving downtown, and taking up current vacant space. Now there'll be more need for a new tower for someone else.
