Yeah it would be but where would they put it on Broad ? I`m thinking the corner on Royal street where the Hampton is ( the old Buick building)would be good for Publix.

I think Foley or Fairhope is getting a Publix. The western portion of Dauphin street d.t and someone mentioned St. Louis street as being nice areas for ground level retail.

What is the name of the street where the Gayfers building is at ? that would be a cool area as well and even Royal street.

The old Delchamps building would be the easiest for them but that area is sort of run down.

I know Publix doesnt do really small stores but something like the new Greer's Markets on a corner downtown would be nice...with tables outside and all that fun stuff.

The city dopes need a Publix, though. Hopefully Foley gets one too.

Wonder what it will be...any guess??

I hope that developer is going to build something useful there becasue the demolition of that bank tower is going to take away some density from the skyline !

It would be a bit asinine on the part of the developer to demolish such a historical building as the Royal St. Francis. If anything, that building should serve as the anchor for this development.

The Southeast corner of St. Louis and St. Josephs St. is NOT the Merchants National Bank Building, as you have mistakenly identified it with. Look it up.

I think it's one of those low-slung one-story bank buildings of which the major feature is the drive-up windows. If we still don't have this nailed down by tomorrow, I'll try to get by there and take a picture.

Lamberts

Before we moved to Denver, my wife and I chose to spend a week in Gulf Shores instead of Panama City because of Lamberts and the Cheesecake Restaurant in Gulf Shores. Thats true we used our stomach as a compass.

I think Ladd holds about 45k right ?

Look, I agree, Mobile NEEDS a major, state-of-the-art civic/entertainment venue, but let's focus on the pros of what we have. I mean there's NO DEBT: the Civic Center is paid off, meaning a better profit.

I do, however, think that it needs a MAJOR renovation. This is very sensible in that it is MUCH cheaper (well, in most cases) than just a total rebuild. This will attract more "high end" performances.

I mean think about it, if you were a major performing artist, you would want to go to all the MAJOR cities you can. For one, they have LARGER arenas, which means MORE ticket sales, which is important because any given tour only lasts for about 2 or 3 months. The bigger the arenas the BIGGER the ticket sales.

Why build a 60,000 seat arena when Mobile doesn't have the market for that? It would never be worth it (at this point in time) and the city will end up losing money. If anything, we'd see ticket prices rise SHARPLY.

I'm as much for a MAJOR arena in Mobile as the next person, but first we need to have sell out concerts/etc... at what we already have.

Yeah, I believe that they're talking about the building a block BEHIND the drive-in Rgions that faces Eater. The building BEHIND the White one? Anybody sure...?

I'm thinking its the building right across St. Joseph Street from the Federal Courthouse...which would be the whole block of St. Louis Street to the north, east of N. Royal Street, St. Michael Street to the south, and west of St. Joseph Street IF he has bought and leased several adjacent properties and plans to combine the parcels for a future commercial project.

The funding for the contract has been approved, but it still needs to be 'approved' by the GAO as well.

That's correct. The old American National Bank building is a two-story brown brick that has been vacant for at least 20 years. I often wondered why it sat vacant for that many years when just about every other building in that area was renovated or in use. It sits directly across St. Joseph Street from the Federal courthouse and across St. Louis Street from Alabama Power Co building. It will be nice to see something viable on that corner.
