Ah... you've got to love Starbuck's. They are taking over the world one cup of coffee at a time

In Houston there is a location in the River Oaks area where there is a Starbuck's accross the street from... you guessed it another Starbuck's!

Crazy ain;t it? But if it were my company I would be doing the same thing! As long as there is the demand.............. just can't wait to watch them try to start updating all those stores and not get left in the 90's!

BTW.... was on my bike downtown today and noticed they were drilling core samples on the Fed courthouse site!!!!!!! I was surprised to see this.

Well Starbucks isn't doing so well right now, because they've over saturated the market. They're actually curtailing the opening of new stores in the US, and are beginning to close some stores.

If you think having two starbucks on one block is crazy try havin 4 with 2 across the street in one barnes & noble thats newyork for you. not includind a seattles best less than a block away.

That new AMLI design looks like a hospital. Yuck, boring. Too bad given it's visual prominence from the trail and Lamar.

There's a comedian, Ron White, who did a bit about those two Starbucks. The guy lives in Houston. He said it was like finding the end of the universe. lol

Actually, it was Lewis Black from the appropriately titled "End of the Universe" concert. There's even a photo on the CD cover from the River Oaks Shopping Center where it was possible to get both in one shot.

Not sure if the free-standing one is still there since that one was on the side of the shopping center that was being demolished and rebuilt...

Anyway, back to the Austin thread

The madness that has for some time pushed company's to place store's in closer proximity's to other comparable stores has reached another peak. Some time back I recall reading Henry Rollins (Black Flag) book... 2-13-61, in it he wrote that a one time in Austin you could stand at one point in the city and see 3 7-11's. He actually was a fan of the chain. That factoid now possibly pertains to countless company's as well.

It might have been, but that's not where I got it. It's a Damien Hirst artwork. It's pretty badass.

I don't think that applies anymore though. 7-11 seems to be a bit smaller. We have one a quarter mile away. And another about a mile and a half. And another one about 3 miles away. But these are all in different directions. I actually like 7-11, very convenient for being 24 hours.

Anyway, more on the goofy strategic stores. A new Advanced Auto Parts store opened up near my neighborhood. And wouldn't you know it, an Auto Zone store that had been at one location for about 20 years moved down the street so they could position themselves across the street from the Advanced Auto parts. It was also funny to see HEB move out of one building, to their new one, then have Albertsons move into their old building, only to move out again when they pulled out of Austin. Also seeing Albertsons build a brand new store only to pull out of their 5 years later and have it occupied by Fiesta.

^Do you know what they are doing right next to the A Plus bank there? They stripped out a lot of trees, it looks almost like they are going to make a road.

I'm not sure. But yeah, they ripped out all the trees from Radam Lane to Emerald Forrest. This area is about 1,500 feet from my house across Stassney. I've been able to hear the machinery during the day. I'm thinking it's probably some kind of small office. Maybe medical office. South Austin Hospital is less than a 5 minute drive down Emerald Forrest. Otherwise, I would guess apartments maybe. Once something gets above ground, I'll ride over and snap a few photos. From the corner there at Emerald Forrest Drive and Stassney there's actually a view of Palisades West all the way in West Austin. Kind of neat. And farther south on Emerald Forrest I could see the tower cranes for The Terrace office complex. If they ever move forward with plans to build their proposed taller buildings at The Terrace, I'm thinking they may be visible from the place I'm speaking of.

I think of the Jiffy Lube's, 2 on North Burnet between Anderson Ln and 183 maybe a 1000ft or so from each other and then there is another one on Anderson Ln near the proposed new Walmart. Thats just silly and they are always empty, silly corporations.

Albertsons closed its store at 183 and Ohlen and its now being striped inside last I saw, I wonder what going in there, I checked the Site Plan reviews on the city website but found nothing as of now. Sucks for me cause that one was a few blocks from my place, it closing made my drive at least 3 to 4 miles to get to the closet grocery store.

Ah, OK, now that makes sense. Yeah, I'm not thrilled with it. Hope the materials are better than their usual fare.... we'll see. They just need to grow their design chocies so they are not so sub-urban.

I remember reading somewhere that HEB had worked out a deal to occupy several of the old Albertson's stores in Austin and San Antonio. Its simple market economics. HEB commands an 80% or higher market share in central texas, making it very different for a new comer like Albertsons to gain ground. Their prices were simply to high for the customer they were trying to target, the HEB customer, and Randalls was already catering to the high-end customer.
