Hamilton ranks 86th in Canada

Hamilton ranks 86th in Canada

CHML April 29, 2008

It seems we are in the middle of the pack here in Hamilton.

Money Sense magazine is out with the list of the best places to live in Canada.

Hamilton ranks 86th out of 154.

We were 22nd on last year's list.

The magazine says it based its rankings on 60 indicators, including unemployment, household income, air quality and weather.

Burlington ranks eighth.

Ottawa is number one.

It's a good thing for any city that's not in the top ten that most people don't give a crap about these kinds of rankings any more than they do about macleans university rankings ;-)

haha...what the heck kind of ranking is this??
unless a nuke was dropped on us that I missed, how the heck can we go from 22 to 86?? Lol.
And if Burlington is 8th, shouldn't every other bland, boring, souless, box-store-filled suburb round out the top 100??
Seriously, what's the difference between Burlington, Laval, Kanata, Grimsby or Chilliwack (other than Burlington's lovely southwesterly winds blowing across the steel mills right at them)??

^ probably because the Hamilton marketing office did not pay as much for a good ranking as last year. Ottawa dished out the big bucks this year and took number one.

I feel sorry for the poor person whose job it was to make a bunch of spreadsheets to try and make this list up -- only to make 99 enemies for each friend.

Burlington #8....?

I guess they don't think, stadia, arenas, civic centres, convention centers, art galleries, colleges, universities, pro sports, newspapers, tv/radio stations, having more then one hospital, medical centers, walkable places, add anything to a city.

lol.

It's a list by 'Money Sense', and you can buy a home for 1/4 the price in Hamilton vs. the cost in Toronto, which is only 70km, and we rank 86th......

I'd hate to take any of their sensical advice, period.

Yeah, and the Hamilton Art Gallery is the 3rd largest in Ontario, and Hamilton has a downtown which is more than a few blocks along one street. lol.

Keep in mind the majority of people don't value an urban lifestyle, as is evidenced by the world around us. I can understand Burlington's higher performance given the criteria they listed, that is, purely objective. Hamilton's appeal is more in the intangibles.

I work in a company of 30 people in Burlington. One of them lives here. That says something about its role as a city.

I don't even look at it as a city. Canada only has a handful of cities.
If we start calling places like Burlington and Markham 'cities' then we've actually got thousands of cities.

Downtown Burlington is nice because the stock of old buildings they do have are well kept. Its interesting how this is usually the case in small cities and towns as well as the big cities, but medium sized cities like Hamilton suffer the worst.

If you look at the list you'll notice for Hamilton it has N for Sports yet Winnipeg has a Y. We have CFL and AHL same for Winnipeg.

^ really? goes to show how well informed the researchers were. If we had a tv station(s) or newspaper(s) that actually supported its own city or CBC represented us on the national scene, the rest of Canada wouldn't be so ignorant of Hamilton.

And Hamilton is within a relatively short drive of 2 NHL Teams, a second CFL Team and a NFL Team.

There are 3 types of lies; 1. Lies, 2. Damn Lies, and 3. Statistics (including polls & lists)..........

You guys are in the shadow of Toronto... that's a hard thing to overcome and it's a problem that will never go away. I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Yes, that will always be a problem.

But I think a larger problem is the major media in the city is owned by outsiders (Torstar - Toronto and Canwest - Winnipeg) which limits it Hamilton boosterism locally, regionally and nationally.

I was shocked when I moved to Hamilton and discovered apart from local news CHCH seems to just be the 'E!' channel, WTF......

Don't get me started.
Thankfully we have plenty of local media like H-mag, RTH, Hammerboard, Mayday etc....
