There is a house a block away that burned a year ago that has not been touched. I assume it was a rental and that the same jerk still owns it, but even if it was owned by folks living there, they obviously abandoned it, which makes the area look bad, invites crime, etc...
This could be because of ARB, ironically enough. Restoring a burned-out house in accordance with their guidelines is very expensive. It is my understanding that if the owner is not interested in a "labor of love" he is not allowed to tear it down until he has offered it for sale for a certain period of time. Nobody else wants to take on an expensive reno job either, especially since the owner isn't motivated to sell at a rock-bottom price...and there it sits.

I'm hearing hotel.
Do we really need even more hotel rooms? Or is it a case of if we build it they will come? Is there something about being eligible for larger conventions, etc. if we have a certain number of rooms downtown?

I don`t think we need another hotel, but since USA is having a team now it would be cool to knock down the civic center and turn that area into a 40 or 50 k seat dome arena.

I think Ladd holds about 45k right ?

Thats what I want, as some may have noticed by now.

Though we really need 60,000 so we can host a Super Bowl.

I think your gonna need an NFL team first. Then we can do this party! In the meantime, the Euro manuf. party is rocking in Mobile. Let's get VW and top this bitch off!

Oh yeah I`m with you all the way ! During the NG/Airbus win Jones mentined about a "Project Phoenix" which are mega economic projects that will be coming to the Mobile area during that win I wonder does VW have anything to do with it. For years the state has been getting autoplants and the the Mobile area has never been mentined or looked at ,and now the state consider us a potential site. Which is new, strange, but good,if anybody can remeber, during the time of the NG/AirBus win I mentioned about BMW but know I realize it`s VW ,I heared about a German automaker who was eyeing the Mobile area. The first thing came to mind was BMW because the state already has Mercedes ,but I forgot about VW !

The turning basin for the Port of Mobile has been approved. This should allow larger cruise ships to run out of Mobile... it will also allow for large container ships to visit the Choctaw Point Terminal.

Great news:

A nice midsize, high-quality hotel would be the perfect anchor for my proposed, hypothetical St. Louis Street entertainment district.

Eventful, thanks for asking. We did not go to Noja's we went to California Dreaming instead; it was nice. The city was really busy this weekend, but I had people over so I did not go to go a lot of places I wanted to.

Downtown Mobile

The last time I was in Mobile ( June 2004 ) we rode the trolley around downtown, but we noticed that there were few stores there ( downtown ). I am curious , with your new growth have any new stores located in the downtown area ?

Yes, they have opened some new stores, just not a national chain store; they are working hard on that, and trying to open it fast.

Of course not. New Orleans has hosted multiple Super Bowls.

Maybe we should start with a more modest approach and attract the World's Fair.

The World`s Fair could be a good start.
