Hot from Kathy Jumper's business column in the Press-Register this morning....

Demolition will begin soon on the old American Nation al Bank building at the southeast corner of St. Louis and St. Joseph streets, according to Realtors. A Birmingham developer has bought and leased several adjacent properties and plans to combine the parcels for a future commercial project.

Wonder what it will be...any guess??

I saw that this morning and wanted to ask if anyone has any idea what that building looks like? Is it an older building. The artcle said "the old American National Bank building ", but how old are we talking? or is it just "old" as in the previous location? I hate losing historic buildings. People in the 60's-80's thought it was a good idea to knock down some of our best buildings in the name of something newer. I couldn't picture the building or the location so if anyone has any idea what it looks like I would appreciate it.

I don't think any of the buildings at that intersection are from earlier than the 1950's.

Need some INfo

We are planning a trip this late summer of traveling the Gulf coast with my wife for our anniversary and want to know if there are any Boutique Hotels in Downtown Mobile. We are going to start in Key West and drive the complete gulf and end in South Padre Island. She wants to do only Boutique Hotels, as they are not usually crowded. This will give me a chance to observe the new additions in Downtown.

Right now the closest thing to a boutique hotel downtown would be to stay in the historic portion of the BattleHouse. The Grand Hotel in Point Clear is also not your average hotel. I would not call either boutique, but I would not put them in the same category as a Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn, Hilton type place either. Both will give discounts for AAA and RSA if you are a member of either organization.
If you want a bed and breakfast try these two:

Kate Sheppard House is another B&B but is not within walking distance of downtown.

I stayed in the Battlehouse Hotel, the historic portion, last summer and it was probably the best stay I'd ever had at a hotel. Very nice place. Quiet, and you were within a short walking distance of A LOT of stuff.

http://www.al.com/news/press-register/index.ssf?/base/news/1209287813184950.xml&coll=3

"Analyst Scott Hamilton said he wouldn't be surprised to see Airbus eventually shift its entire A330 commercial line to Mobile. The company has sold nearly 900 of the planes since 1992 and has delivered more than 500, putting the wait for a new A330 at almost five years. Hamilton said Airbus is facing a bottleneck in Toulouse as it ramps up production of its newer A350 and A380 jets.

"I think the A330 program eventually moves to Mobile, and that's part of the reason why Boeing is fighting the tanker award so hard," Hamilton said. "They want to deny them the cash flow from the contract and the relief they would get from the currency problem. And they want to deny them a commercial foothold on (Boeing's) home turf."

For now, Airbus is racking up plenty of orders for its A330 freighter, introduced to customers last year. The company has firm commitments for 77 planes, and its market projections are strong."

I didn't realize the potential of that happening over time. Man this thing could change the entire Gulf Coast in ways not even imagined.

I've heard rumblings that commercial planes might also be assembled there in the future. Mobile will never be the same.

To be honest I didn't know if those folks owned or if it was the landlord, but to me it looked like they were doing the best job they knew how to do with what they could afford. There are some slumlords who own property down here, true, but I don't want to see people who own their homes driven out so that---exactly what you said--- a bunch of investors can make a buck redoing their houses. I feel hypocritical since our block is pretty solidly gentrified, but I think there should be a middle ground between slumville and Colonial Williamsburg.
I agree. One of the main reasons I like living here is because of the diversity - and that includes incomes and economic status. The real issues lie with slumlords and Section 8 properties as well as houses that are totally vacant and in terrible shape. If some lives somewhere and truly can't do any better, you can't be over demanding on how there house looks. However, if a house is vacant and an eyesore, I think the city should a have the right to seize the property and auction it to someone who will fix it up. There is a house a block away that burned a year ago that has not been touched. I assume it was a rental and that the same jerk still owns it, but even if it was owned by folks living there, they obviously abandoned it, which makes the area look bad, invites crime, etc...

Its pretty ugly. Probably built in the 60s. It looks like old salvaged brick was used however. I just hope with the developer being from Birmingham, its built to blend in with the area. I assume they are also talking about the adjacent parking lots, which are ugly as well. I just hope they don't tear it down a leave a vacant lot for 10 years.

I hope it`s a 500 footer, lol, but realy if it`s going to be a high rise I think it would be in the 300 foot range. Like the size of river view before the crown. I wonder when will they start the Radison expansion.

Good to hear from you Bayou !
