Does anyone know anything about Grandview at Cottage Hill? It appears that not much is happening up there. I wonder if the economic down turn has hit that project. Anymore news on the fourth hotel?
My wife and I took the civil war tour with Mary Ann Neeley on Saturday. She told a wonderful story about the building that sat where the Renaissance is now. It seems the original building from the 1830's was a combination hotel, restaurant, and entertainment venue. Lafayette was entertained in the building that stood on the corner facing Commerce. As Mary Ann said, things tend to go in circles when looking at history. When she got to Court Square, she pointed to the old Pizitz building (one Court Square) and reminded us that the Courthouse sat there in the early 1800's hence Court Street and Square. She then said, maybe government will return to that location. Again, history repeats itself.

The Grandview web site is still up, but they are no longer listing it through Re/Max. Don't know what's going on, although work on the 5 points turning circle is supposed to start soon.

Sale pending sign is still up on the Hotel site.

How tall will the new Statehouse be if built? Where exactly would it be located if built on lower Dexter?

Early Montgomery Residential Architects

I've seen some photos of homes in Montgomery that were considered "different" or avant garde from the 1920s-1950s. I've looked on the national register of historic homes website and any other sites of that ilk and can't find these photos again. Who were some of the notable architects during this period and would there be any pictures of their works online?

I just hope it's not torn down to make way for a parking deck.

Unless the city emminent domains him, nobody is going to pay that guy more than a million dollars for that sliver of land.

And the One Court Square property has plenty of room for a deck.

I think Montgomery's 'noted architect' was Frank Lockwood. That's what they're calling the new subdivision going up on the old Standard Club's golf course.

In 1908, there were only 10 houses in Cloverdale, but by 1916 there were 125. Many of these homes were designed by Montgomery's leading architects, B. B. Smith, Weatherly Carter, Frank Lockwood Sr. and Frank Lockwood Jr. One house was designed by Mobile architect Nicholas Holmes Sr.

questions.

harvey is the one that has the keys to the kress building. are you a potential buyer or just a curious looker?

the statehouse is going to be put at one court square(if the city plan gets accepted)
the renderings i have seen are more conceptual but the plan is a ceremonial building in the front that will be attractive and in scale with the rest of dexter except for a possible dome or tower at the corner on montgomery street. the rest of the block (including nobles and olive room) will be a huge building to handle the majority of the offices as well as the parking for the entire structure.

i am excited about the possibilities on the lower end of dexter, and i think they will do it right since they are using dover kohl.

Perhaps the most noted work of Frank Lockwood is the Federal Courthouse to which Barganier added the semi circular addition near the Troy University Campus downtown. One of Lockwood's most beautiful houses is the Brown family house on the corner of Thomas and Woodley behind Huntingdon College. The very large English Tudor home has a portico through the left side and sits on one of the best lots in Montgomery. He also designed the Standard Club which was the jewish country club for years. The Standard Club is the large Tudor building in the middle of the new Lockwood gated community on Narrowlane Road hence the name Lockwood for the community.

So true. Some seem to be constructing something just because of all of the other construction going on around them...growth breeding growth I guess...good sign.

wife and I celebrated our 9th anniversary tonite, with a trip to The House. I have to admit it, that's the first time I've dropped a c-note on dinner for two.... but it was nice.

There was also a band playing outside at the Exchange, it was really neat.
