I think that as soon as the merger is approved by the feds that SLC needs to break ground on the new North terminal, underground connector rail and the trax extension.

I think that will show that SLC is serious about it's plans for the future. I agree with the first impression of a city being the airport. I have a good impression of Cincinnati but I've only been to the airport, as well as Chicago, while I have been in the city the airports newer section, American is absolutely beautiful. A new terminal in conjunction with transit access to downtown, Ogden and eventually Provo will be HUGE for SLC's image.

That would be great, but not a chance. It will still be 5 years before ground is broken.

Trolley Square Redevelopment

I asked this before week ago, and received no reply. So, I'm going to try again. Does anyone know what the status is of the Trolley Square redevelopment? What are the approved plans, renderings, etc.? Also, if they have already began construction, does anyone know what's been done so far?

I drove by there on 6th South a few weeks ago--it looks like demolition of the old garage along 6th East has already happened, but I couldn't tell what else was going on. And I haven't seen any updates on plans or renderings in a long time. So "stuff" has already started, certainly, but I can't tell you anything beyond that. Hopefully one of our intrepid photographers will go do some digging.

Park City ski resort plans upgrades

http://www.sltrib.com/business/ci_8953069

*For full article refer to Compilation Thread

Note: For future reference, often a SL Trib. article will be printed in full on the Compilations Thread. There will be a tag if an article is in the Comp. Thread. Also, I'm going to start an 'index' at the top of page 2 of the Compilations Thread. There's not so many pages in the Comp. Thread yet, that it will take too long to get it up and started. There will probably be some tweaking of headings and sub-headings at first. If any of you guys have suggestions, just send me a PM. This will help us when we want to refer back to a particular project for our local discussions, but can't remember where the heck it's located.

Apartment rents rising in West - nearly 10% in Salt Lake

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695271080,00.html

...with the increases ranging from less than 1 percent in Reno, Nev., to 9.9 percent in Salt Lake City, which had the largest percentage increase among the major Western cities surveyed.

The fact remains, SLC is just too darned centrally located in the Western states and Skywest will continue to be a major player connecting Bozeman (and many other smaller communities) Montana and now The City of Lights. With this merger I too have a few wishes:

1. Non stop service SLC to Tokyo (trim a daily trip from Detroit and/or MSP)
2. Non stop service SLC to South America (Brazil, Argentina, Chile)
3. New midfield SLC Concourse, there is no need to totally get rid of the current configuration. The midfield would be similar to those at DIA and allow larger, Intercontinental jets (777's) to manevuer better than in the traditional current arrangement. Midfield would need new customs area, use the current customs area in West Terminal 2 for expanded Skywest gates.
4. Connect midfield concourse with underground transport system (I like the McCarran D Gates as an example), or again DIA.
5. Third parallel N-S runway, the longest one at SLC.
6. Entice either FedEx or UPS to open a western hub at SLC, their only hubs right now are back east. Ok, this one isn't related to the Delta merger, but it makes sense for these companies. Try sending a Fedex from say Seattle to Phoenix. How does it go, SEA>MEM>PHX??
7. Airport LTR and quickly. I HATE taking the UTA bus from Downtown to SLC.

Someone please diagram a midfield. What about 20 or so gates?
My wish list remains the same and yes SLC will need to add new facilities in order to stay competitive. Do you know that JetBlue is incorporated in Utah? I'd like to see a new terminal for Delta so that JetBlue could pick up new gates and expand service out of it's future Western hub. JB has already added recent flights to S.F. and L.V. It could have a great future here if the airport would invest what is necessary.

8. Non stop SLC>Amsterdam, I left this one off the list, with Paris starting soon, another flight to the hub in Amsterdam makes perfect sense.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I remember the other week my parents were telling my wife and I that back when they were our age. ( early 20's ) they could pay rent a 4 bedroom house with a unfinished basement ( room for maybe two more bedrooms ) for about $500.00 per month. Now we can't even rent a ONE bedroom apartment for that same price.
Gas goes up, food goes up, rent goes up, every thing goes up..................my paycheck stays the same.

True! However, the average median income has also gone up, so depending on their age, it may have actually been more expensive for them.

These are listed by current dollars for those years.
1965 $5,598
1970 $7,891
1980 $15,579
1990 $23,341
2006 $48,201

It's all relative

As my economics teacher way back in my sophmore year at SLCC. A $0.90 Gallon of milk in 1970 was actually more expensive than the $2.10 (est) price in 1995.

Although I couldn't find renderings and other stuff on the project, I found this write up which has a good description of things to come there.

Also, I believe they have progressed to stage 2, as the parking deck has been leveled and is being rebuilt. Haven't heard about the possibilities of a residential tower there. Last I heard the new 55k sq ft building was to be built for Whole Foods, however, there is a Whole Foods a block and a half up the road at 7th E/4th S, it used to be Wild Oats before their merger, although the Oats name is still on the building.

I have not heard of a residential tower going up either, but there will be a condominium project going up around the corner called Huntington Park. From my understanding it will consist of 4 floors creating 43-45 units at about 540 e and 500 s. They should be pretty nice

I did a search for there website, looks like it may be under construction:

Yeah that location will be closing when the trolley location opens. Atleast that is what I heard like 6 months ago. ... Also I heard that the residential tower was put on hold for right now, but it might still be built... I am pretty certain that I heard that from viperlord on here a couple months back.

here is a pdf from the Utah Heritage Foundation:

I contacted a guy about the Ballet West academy downtown next to the capitol theater:

he said...

"At this time, HKS Architects is completing the Ballet West Academy / Capitol Theatre Renovation architectural program and cost estimate phase. When we move through to the design phase, Ballet West will be publishing those designs and using these for fundraising purposes. It is unclear at present when that will occur."

Thumbs down

So I guess the Central Warehouse on 2nd South is going to be demolished.

I was talking to people in the Architecture building and people are saying that its going to be knocked down. Then, I was talking with someone that is developing the site, he said they it will be demolished for some kind of sports complex or something. He couldn't tell me much but it sounds pretty official.

Here is a pic I took a while ago, just so we know exactly what building it is.

I thought that building was on the historic registry and had to be preserved. They should just incorporate it in whatever sport thing it is

Becker invites public to a Saturday chat

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695271630,00.html

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker will host his first Saturday Morning with the Mayor at 9 a.m. Saturday in the large bowery at Jordan Park, 1060 S. 900 West.
Becker and city staff will be on hand to visit with and answer questions from the public. The event is an outgrowth of the campaign promise Becker made to be open and accessible as mayor and to focus on the city at the neighborhood level.

At 10 a.m., Becker will join students from the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center for an Earth Day service planting project at the Bend-in-the-River, 1030 W. Fremont Ave.

SLC skyline 'pretty disappointing' - But Pulitzer winning architecture critic finds many downtown buildings to love during his visit

http://origin.sltrib.com/news/ci_8969107?source=rv

Blair Kamin, Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic from the Chicago Tribune does a small tour of downtown Salt Lake City to offer some opinions on buildings, before his talk about preservation at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on Thursday. (Francisco Kjolseth/The Salt Lake Tribune )

"It's amazing for an outsider to walk down your Main Street," he said gazing into a dirt construction pit as a TRAX train zipped by. "It feels like China." Still, he called the scale of development, all at the same time, remarkable.
"I don't mean that it's good, but it's bold."

They are -- demolition and foundation work is complete--they may even have the first two floors up. Or more.
