And Saskatoon's present day City Hall, a presentation of less than mediocre architecture.

There's a definite theme here... seems it's almost a necessity to have a great big clock on your city hall.

Makes me wonder why Moncton doesn't have one... though we do have our concrete stonehenge...

St.Boniface's old city hall.

It is now the constituency office for Councilor Vandal I believe.

Also included, a postcard of Winnipeg's old city hall

As well as the city hall Winnipeg almost built in the 1930's.

Interesting design. Too bad it wasn't built.

I kind of like the Modernist city hall. The oldest one looks a bit gaudy.

Pretty much. That's probably because they were both post offices originally. I'd venture to guess that there are plenty of buildings across Canada that are quite similar. Regina's city hall was only in that building for a short time (I think it was a couple of years) while the current building was being built.

Yeah, funny you say that. I took a picture of the post office in downtown Cambridge today, and though how much it looked like the one on Whyte Ave. in Edmonton (which use to be the downtown for the city of Strathcona). Cut and paste across the country, eh?

IIRC, Winnipeg's city hall was in very bad shape, which led to its demolition.

They had one architect make a few designs and used those over and over again, especially during the depression to save costs when building the post offices, which were usually make-work projects. I'm pretty sure the post office on Court Street here has a few replicas across the country as well. In many cases, it could be the same architect just tweaking a former design. Many court houses in the US have very similar (but not exact) designs, as they were from the same architect.

Port Arthur's former post office, now a federal government building.

The backside of City Hall. In the winter the market square is converted into an outdoor rink.

The old Gingerbread city hall was definitely a landmark and was just as much a part of Winnipeg and Winnipeg folklore as the Golden Boy, Salisbury House Nips and -40 degree winters.

It stills plays an important role in the psyche of Winnipegger's. As you can see, the old city hall is featured prominently in the forefront of this recent mural.

While it has never been 'beautiful' in the traditional sense, the new city hall has always fascinated me. The building very much represents the idealism of the 60's.

For its time, it represented the state of the art in architecture and had no less lofty a goal than the complete revitalization of the area around it.

People back then weren't so afraid to take risks
