Here is the talked about Regent Street. It would be great to liven this street up with all that they have talked about.

I think that they mentioned possible condo towers on this end of the street.

Here are a few more I took while walking down Regent Street.

And urbanboy, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings, I just thought it was funny that you called the mayor Ralph, I wasn't trying to judge you or anything. Let us just be friends from now on because I like you for who you are.

I would never claim to be an artist but here are some renderings that I had envisioned for Regent Street. First floor retail with the former docks filled in to have retail, and 2nd and 3rd floor residential, it also includes narrowing Regent St. to one way with a wider sidewalk to allow for local retail and sidewalk dining.

This would be my ultimate vision for Regent St. connecting CCC and Gallivan.

Wow you are really random.

BTW, Behead Those Who Insult Mormons?

BTW2, this is my 100th post.

BTW3, I had a dream last night that CCC opened and I went to take a tour. It was very futuristic looking, but surprisingly small. I could only find three retail stores. One of them was a clothing store for kids, the second one was for babies, and the third one was a maternity store. All I could say was "Yikes!!!!"

These are the more complete renderings I was looking for, I don't think the new plans call for a reuse of the press building but my concept did.

This is the current area that is open under the second floor.

The is were the presses were in plain brick building.

I even included fencing for the sidewalk dining.

I don't really care much for Arrow Press Square and I would welcome a big hotel there on that site. Sorry.

I disagree. At this point, SLC needs to keep and attempt to renovate every historic building we have remaining... There are surface lots a plenty in our fair city.

Just one quick correction UrbanBoy, Hotel Utah is in the bottom left of the first picture. I like the images of lost architectural treasures, these are some definite losses and there are many more.

As for Arrow Press Square, and 100 S buildings. I am completely against getting rid of those for a hotel. Like many others have said there is plenty of space elsewhere. If they are going to demolish something for a new hotel I would vote for the Shilo.

There is no need to demolish the 100 S and ArrowPress buildings, especially since of all the streets surrounding the old malls 100 S actually has remained retail, The Bennett Paint Bldg up to Dinwoody Plaza is 100% occupied. Mikado, Oxford Shop, Mynt, Utah art hands or something like that and Cafe' Molisse (sp) I see no need to demolish these or ArrowPress, why demolish existing retail in historic character adding buildings for a hotel that could go elsewhere. The interior of ArrowPress is rather interesting and I think it could become very vibrant to the new arts district.

While Arrowpress Square isn't amazing, it's these smaller historical buildings that define our city. Just because they're not tall or they're not dramatically stunning architecturally, it doesn't mean they're any less important.

This is the type of mindset which allowed Salt Lake to demolish the above buildings. Hell, even Chinatown on Plum Street wasn't amazing, since it had smaller buildings, but imagine if it had stayed instead of being torn down for a huge parking structure.

For this...

Was it worth it? Hardly.

I tend to live by the rule that if you can build it somewhere else without demolishing historical buildings, then you build it somewhere else. The fact is, there are a bunch of places where they can build a convention hotel, why pick a place with some historical buildings?

Salt Lake City has lost too many smaller historical buildings, that had we kept would've made for a pretty awesome city. Look at the 2-3 story warehouses that were demolished after the 1950s. Those buildings were probably nothing spectacular, but how cool would've it been to have a real, dense warehouse district? I mean, even today's warehouse district -- while nice -- still has far too much empty lots. Lots where, at one point, historical warehouses once stood.

This was just an interesting article that I read, thought some people might like it.

Redefining the Mormon Empire

By Peggy Fletcher Stack
and Jessica Ravitz
The Salt Lake Tribune

Brigham Young called it "Deseret."
To writer Wallace Stegner it was "the Mormon Empire," a vast swath of Great Basin territory from Mesa, Ariz., in the south to Boise in the north, and from Reno, Nev., in the west to Grand Junction, Colo. in the east whose residents looked to Salt Lake City for religious and political guidance.

Sorry Urbanboy, I will get pictures of the fronts of the building and the plaza next time. I was in a hurry and just took a couple of shots of the potential areas for building. I also want to get these shots of the fronts just in case something does happen to them, I will have them captured forever. I don't like to see the old buildings go either and would like to see it developed in the manner that you have described. I think you have a great layout developed and it would be great to see these things happen.

More gems that SLC has lost. (reposted newhouse hotel because urban boys link didn't work)

Newhouse Hotel which was located at 400 S. and Main Street. Demolished so Earl Holding wouldn't have to pay taxes and could sit on his property. Currently home to a beautiful SURFACE PARKING LOT!

Aurbachs which was torn down for crossroads mall.

Original Salt Palace that was lost to a fire, not development. Was on 900 S. and Main Street I believe

The Inn at Temple Sqaure which was a beautiful building that was just recently torn down for City Creek Center Tower 1. (I love the new tower, but really really miss the old Inn)

some buildings on Main Street

Another view of the templeton (I often imagine how beautiful the south temple and main street intersection would have been in days past. With the Hotel utah on one corner, the Templeton to the south. Aurbachs on the southwest and temple square on the northwest. ... what a shame.

more buildings on main street.

... not to mention the fact that we've lost chinatown, greektown, little italy. We didn't use either the union pacific depot or rio grande as stops for commuter rail or traxx. ... countless mansions. ... SLC has lost a fair share of classical and historical buildings. ... I am not saying that the buildings on arrowpress square are these kinds, but some of them have a rugged beauty. .. Once they are gone, they are gone. SLC has way too many lots to continue this madness of tearing down history.
