not the best map ever. But at least it gives us an idea of what project is going on where.

I really like the original plans better. My first reaction to this other design, is what the hell are they thinking?

Found this one on the state historical website and thought I would share with you all since we were just talking about the Jestons building a little while back. Here is the Prudential Federal Savings from 1963.

That fisrt plan is hot. to bad its not getting built that way.

Has anyone heard anything about a hotel at arrowpress square. I have heard rumors from some people involved that they are going to tear down all of arrowpress square, Cafe molise, Oxford, Mikado etc for a new hotel for the convention center. I hope this doesn't happen I think that is one of the cooler parts of Salt Lake. I am afraid in people zeal to rejuvinate downtown they are kicking alotof the small business and tearing down some very nice historic buildings, which is what gives salt lake it character.

That would be an outrage! This is a very good reason why a convention hotel should be built on the japan town block.

I went into the future.

Myself, I like the new plans, as it's a new innovative type of architecture that takes old shipping containers and makes them into residential units.

What's so special about Arrow Press Square? I was at Blue Iguana today and got a good look at this complex. It has seen better days and there is nothing historic about this in my opinion. A muti story hotel with convention space would be a great use for this area with its proximity to Capitol Theater and the Salt Palace.

I agree that the Arrowpress Square location would be ideal for a convention hotel...put the hotel there and let the funk establish itself elsewhere. Moving those places (Mikado etc.) could revitalize both their business and other blocks.

And Sean (or anyone who knows) --I've read some articles about building re-using shipping containers, and I think it's a great idea. So would that building have seven floors? They looked awfully short, but being built out of repurposed shipping containers would explain that. It certainly wouldn't be any worse than some of the apartments I've lived in--and would actually be much better.

It looks like alot of "Pencils Boxes" stack on top of each other. It reminds me of when I was a kid in school I would stack my pencil boxes on top of each box pretending it was a building. LOL. I like how it's taller, but I like the old design better. IMO

It does appear to have 7 floors. On their website, http://www.citycenterlofts.net, you can see the lay-out of each floor.

I love this building, especially since it's so unique. I don't think it's tacky or ugly like many buildings that try too hard and would add some nice density in that area.

Looks like there is a 4-5 story Residential Condos building going in near 3900 South and 900 East. ( Just behind the Office buildings ) There was a billbroad with a rendering that said "Mill Creek" on it. I didn't get a good look at it since the light turn green and my wife started driving off. LOL. Viperlord or anyone do you know about this project?

I realize there are those who would disagree, and I can understand. IMO this building is going to become an icon,"it is ingenious." Don't allow the color used in the rendering to put you off, but try to look past the rendering to a 'real-live' product. This seems like something the most forward of architects would design in Tokyo. Nobody loves the great classics more than me, but we need a few advant-garge projects in the mix also. I would have probably chosen a different color for the exterior, but I love the design. The arrangement of shapes and the patterns used for the windows will make this little project a tourist attraction, and a great photo op.

...I like what I'm seeing on their site about the City Center Lofts...hope this is going to go forward. I think it's a good area for this kind of experiment, and it could be a fine asset to SLC.

From their site:

Planned Amenities
City Center Lofts will be more than just a green building; constructed from unused cargo containers, the building will be an architectural landmark for Salt Lake City and the United States. In order to allow residents to create a living space that is as unique as the building itself, we will sell the Lofts partially finished and allow residents to complete the space according to their own design.

Moreover, the building will offer unique cultural amenities that will make it a landmark in the Salt Lake art scene as well. Not only will the ground floor storefront be occupied by one of Utah’s major art institutions, but the exterior of the building will contain designated space for public art projects that will be overseen by Utah’s best curators.

Planned building amenities and features include:

• Concrete floors with radiant heat
• Low-e, high performance windows
• Private balcony or deck for every unit
• Private one- or two-car garage with storage for every unit
• Redundant magnetic keycard access for additional security
• Video intercom
• Water-efficient landscaping
• Individual gas and electric metering
• Access to Salt Lake’s finest cultural amenities on the ground floor
• Designated space for public art projects, overseen by Utah’s best curators

I actually think it will look better in real life because, as was mentioned earlier, these things will be sold 'partially finished', and that is how they are shown in the rendering. Most people are likely going to want to add walls, kitchens, bathrooms, furniture, and window coverings.
