That cage box that's going up looks like it could be a lighting feature - like some sort of colour-changing beacon (like on The Met condos in TO). I recall the comment from the developer that there won't be a Shangri-La sign up there (City won't allow it), but what they have planned is more "like art".

I can only imagine it being a lighting feature if it was placed on all three corners of the shangri la. Other then that the cladding looks like it has almost reached the fins. Only about 3-4 levels left on all three sides.
I am hoping the finish product for the lighting will look like this photoshop render that sono65 created.
The original model pics only showed a Shangri-La logo on that southeast corner - so it's possble that there would be only one beacon.
The beacon that is displayed on the south east corner is all the shangri needs, since most traffic enters downtown through that side anyway when coming from America and the suburbs.

I looked out my window a few moments ago and saw a white bolt of lightning streak across the sky and ground on the top of the Shangri-La crane. I phoned it into the fire department just to be safe.

Hey I heard about it also on the news. That a bolt of lightning struck the crane. No one was hurt.
Haven't heard anything, I'm looking into it right now. I'll keep you posted.
No such incident, guess it missed the tower.
Perhaps it was a perspective trick then. I've posted photos of the Shangri-La from my window and I saw the lightning bolt arc from right to left and it sure looked like it terminated at the top of the tower.

Not entirely surprising; that crane is 700 feet up and is the highest lightning attractor in downtown. Lightning strikes the top of Toronto's CN Tower 200 times per year
There is an interesting article about the crane operator at the Shangri-La in the April issue of Vancouver magazine (pp. 27-28). There is also an interesting article on Bob Rennie. I didn't know he was gay! There's one for my team! (Although not sure my team really wants him...)
