Are there any World Class hotel chains based in Japan?

The Little and Grand America Hotels are too far away from the Convention Center to be classified as Convention Hotels.

I read The Enterprise today while I was at the library. The condos are the Urbana on 11th project, I posted a picture on the Sugarhouse redevelopment thread.

Nothing too exciting (or new) about the Valley Fair Mall.

The Intermountain Healthcare building is at 5383 Green St. It will mirror another builing in the same complex and will house employees of Select Health.

For more info, go read The Enterprise for yourself at the library or subscribe. Its full of great stuff. I think I will go read it more often.

Wow, this is a huge thread, it'll take some time to read it all. But, I'd like to know if anyone has any opinion on the development along 4th South, specifically from the Library East to the U. I am in school at the U, and there has been a lot of talk in making this a psuedo strip for college students, with bars, shops, more retail, hopefully some coffee shops too. I don't know, there was a study on the whole corridor, and I hope it gets going, but don't know. If you are interested in that study, let me know, I can send you a pdf of the study. Cheers......

I think development along 400 S is a great idea, with the University Traxx line I think it is a great opportunity to expand the density and stretch the Urban core further east. I think there are a lot of properties along 4th S that need to be redeveloped to eliminate the suburban style development with parking in front and increase the overall density. I think it would be a great College Blvd area.

If I'm not mistaken the zoning along 4th south was updated in recent years allowing for greater height along that street, I would love to see some 10-20 story buildings eventually populate the University Avenue Corridor (maybe even officially change the name) including residential, commercial and mixed use.

300 south instead.

I think 300 south is becoming very vibrant all on its own. I don't see 400 south feeling very urban anytime soon. It is too wide (3 lanes each way plus Trax) The sidewalk is also very close to the roadway which is quite scary. I would love to see it change but right now I would say it is more of a transportation corridor than anything else. Take a walk on 300 south from main street to about 500 east and you might be impressed, it's like a new sugarhouse.

Welcome SLCrising!

Yay for the U, ha. Im going to the U too. Its kinda funny that there are probably people here that I know and see every day, but I dont know who they are here.

I like how 4th has alot of the things that downtown doesnt have, like smiths etc.. But the street is really intimidating to drive down and walk across. I agree with urbane that the street is too big.

I would like to see some condo or residential along the street. I think its heading in the right direction.

The corner of 200 S 700 E is finally getting a long overdue makeover. Big Lots is closed and will be remodeled. Also, a new retail strip is proposed. No new tenants have been announced yet. Here are the renderings for the new buildings.

yeah I very much agree with this. Broadway(300 s.) from Pioneer Park all the way to 500 E. is a rather interesting walk. Art galleries, restaraunts, pubs, pioneer park, food markets, delis, pizza places, a movie theater, historic buildings, rose wagner, itallian food, chinese food, tavernacle, cd shops, greek orthodox cathedral, apartments, condos, etc. ... this is a very interesting corridor that has tremendous potential. still has some surface parking lots and blotchy spots, but I would rather see broadway see more and more interesting college geared merchants pop up to help round off this corridor than see 400 s wind up with them. 400 s is just way too wide at this point to have that pedestrian friendly atmosphere to lend to an interesting street. It has trax, but it is like the size of the freeway. It does need something though... I wouldn't be sad to see university housing and bigger developments along this road to help make the width of this road seem smaller.

... to me, areas like sugarhouse were so cool not just because they had interesting merchants, but because I could be on one side of the road and be able to spot a friend I hadn't seen in a while on the other side of the road and be able to safely J walk to them. It was a gathering place. ... try that on 400 S. and you become road kill.

New look for lot at University of Utah

Planners at the U. are seeking input from community members as well as interested developers who can help design and build a mixed-use development on the nearly eight acres directly west of Rice-Eccles Stadium — currently a slab of concrete parking stalls.

Here is a quick look at what was in the Enterprise. My paper finally came yesterday.

The 140,000 sq ft building for IHC is going to be at 5383 S Green St. Breaks ground this summer and will be a 6 story office building. It will mirror an existing building already at the site.

The condos in Sugarhouse is called Urbana on 11th. The picture in the paper is the same one that I have already seen on this site. I believe it came from Viperlord. They are 1988 S 1100 E, currently a dilapidated parking garage. It should take 10 months to build. It will rise 5 stories. They will be 700 - 1200 sq ft and range in price from $225,000 to $250,000. They are live/work spaces.

Groundbreaking for the Valley Fair Mall rebuild is April 2nd at 10:00 AM. It said, "two companies that are redeveloping the current 700,316 square foot regional shopping mall into an approximately one million square foot hybrid super-regional shopping and entertainment center at I-215 and 3500 South." This phase will include 43,500 sq ft of restaurant and specialty shopping space located along 2700 W and 3500 South. Also there will be a stand alone Wells Fargo on an out parcel. This will happen this summer. Scheduled to be completed in spring of 2010.

Hope this helps. If there is any other info you guys want from week to week let me know. If I see something that will be of interest I will post it.

I graduated from the U with my Masters back in 2000. All the time I went through school there they kept building on top of parking. I always thought that they could use a parking terrace up there. By taking out the huge stadium parking, are there plans to building a parking terrace anywhere. I realize that the goal is for people to either live in the area or take TRAX but realistically the U is still a commuter school with lots of people driving up there and people who drive up there for different theater productions.

Thanks for the info T-Mac. I'm glad to see that the building on 5383 S Green St. will finally go to phase two. The first 6/7 story building was built back in 2002. The 2nd phase was going to take place back in 2005. But it never happen. The developer had a site plan for three buildings on that site. The third building at 12-stories. Also there was going to be a parking garage. Here are some of the old renderings from the first developer. Not sure what IHC has planned.

This first rendering shows tower 3 and 1 with the parking garage.

This 2rd rendering show tower 3. ( from 9-12 stories )

There was going to be three buildings on that site.
Building 1 ( built in 2002 ) at 6-7 stories
Building 2 ( Never built ) at 6-7 stories
Building 3 ( Never built ) at 9-12 stories

Anyways to make a long story short the developer had to sell his project to another developer ( IHC) for whatever reason. I'm glad IHC bought this project because I know they will get it done. I wounder if they are planning on building the third tower just as the first developer planned.
I hope IHC can come up with a better looking design for this 2nd building.

I would like to see 400 S. reduced to 2 lanes in each direction rather than three, using the outer lanes on each side as space for trees (tree-lined street) and bicycle trails. This could create a buffer for pedestrians on the sidewalk, from cars on the street, and provide space for a designated bicycle path. This main thoroughfare with three lanes is not needed in Salt Lake City; we have interconnected streets that spread the traffic out. Trying to designate this road as the main thoroughfare to the University, actually creates too much traffic along that corridor at the expense of having too little traffic on the other roads, hurting businesses on those roads. 400 South can still be a Grand Boulevard even if it only has two lanes in each direction. South Temple only has two lanes, and it is a Grand Boulevard. Furthermore, think how much better 400 South could look with mature trees lining both sides.

Blueprint expanding for SLC's 'Downtown Rising'
By Derek P. Jensen
The Salt Lake Tribune

New in the blueprint: The possibility of stretching residential units across dilapidated Regent Street, anchored by ground-floor specialty shops. There also could be a new condo tower on the corner of Regent and 100 South, directly across from an entry point to City Creek Center.
Stakeholders also are contemplating the relocation of the Salt Lake Arts Center from the Abravanel Hall plaza to a lot across from the Gallivan Center on Regent and 200 South. That could create space near Abravanel for a Broadway-class theater that arts insiders say would create a mini-Kennedy Center adjacent to the Salt Palace Convention Center.

I love the possible addition of more residential buildings immediately south of the City Creek Center. More residents will be great for the city and also encourage more commercial development.
