The $20 million development is part of a commercial revolution in the city, said 23-year-old project manager Andrew So. The Salt Lake City Chinatown project will be built across the street from new fast food and coffee franchises and just blocks from a massive redevelopment project that will bring 18-story condominiums and trolley rails to South Salt Lake.

"2009 will be a great year for the Salt Lake County," said So, a New York University economics graduate. "It's changing and it's going to be exciting."

While City Creek Center and 222 S. Main obviously get the most attention due to the shear size and height of the project, having a dramatic effect on the skyline. It truly is amazing how many little projects are being built around the metro. The combination of CCC and 222 along with countless condo projects nearing completion and under construction around the core of the city, Traxx extensions in the near future and the opening of FrontRunner in just a couple of months, Salt Lake City is really starting to come of age as a major city in the nation.

For the size of the city and the Metro, it really does have an enviable mass transit system and projects that many other larger cities would love to have even half of.

It's an exciting era for Salt Lake City and the Wasatch Front.

Hey Future Mayor, I always enjoy your company over on the local forum, but I've been missing you over here lately. Have you fully recovered from that bout of the bug now?

I think it's going to be really interesting how fast the metro reaches the 3 million mark in the next few years. I think it will happen a lot faster than the time it took to go from one to two million. Thankfully, the leaders and citizens are investing now in mass transit, before the growth overwhelms the quality of life that we all cherish along the Wasatch Front.

Yes for the most part I have recovered from my bout with the bug but i think I have caused myself some serious stress missing to many days to work on school stuff and I don't think I will fully recover until this semester and my degree are complete. Thanks for asking.

Yes I see the metro hitting 3 million much faster than the 1-2 also. I also see the population of Salt Lake City reversing the trend of declining population and increasing as well. One issue regarding population loss in the city is that as the downtown population increases the city overall can have a decline in population. The singles, DINKS(dual income no kids) and empty nesters moving into the central business district often times doesn't counter act the loss of families that may continue to move to the burbs. As gas prices climb, businesses move into downtown, and SLC schools continue to improve I think we could possibly see a reverse trend and have families moving back into or staying in the city.

Nice update, I'm glad the First Security Bldg (Main and 1st South) was saved. I just wonder how the CCC will blend in with the building as its on the same block, or guess it probably will not blend in. Nevertheless, it could very well have been demolished in this process.

Welcome to the forums SLCrising. Glad to have you join us. I think that the Deseret Building that you are referring to will be a wonderful part of the City Creek Center. It will be good to have the older architecture balance the newer buildings that are going in.

I can't believe how much I have changed since joining these forums. When I first joined, I was all for leveling all old buildings and building nicer new ones. However, I have found the error of my ways and been enlightened by others on this forum that the older buildings are critical pieces of our city's history and should not be destroyed but renovated to continue forward in our city's progress. We have plenty of parking lots that are eagerly awaiting a highrise. Let us not replace highrises with highrises.

SLCrising, a big welcome to the forum! Yeah, when it looked as if the First Security might be demolished we flooded the proper authoriities with e-mails in protest. We also requested a lot of forumers from outside the immediate area, such as L.A., Phoenix, and Denver to also protest. The response was great. I'm glad it was saved. Make sure you make your way over to the local forum under the regional section/Mountain West. It would be great to have you over there. We have some 70 or more active members and growing.
