I drove by this new project the other day to take a closer look and was very impressed with how it turned out. The design and materials used for the finish had a great timeless feel to it. I really appreciated both the color and finish on the brick, which gave the buildings a more classic feel instead of a faux interpretation IMO. The whole project seemed to fit well with it's neighborhood and really lifted the whole immediate area. I'm excited to see more of these condo projects come online in the next couple of years along 300 West.

Setting the stage: Does Salt Lake Valley need a new "Broadway' theater?

Notice the beautiful facade on the building next to the Capitol and then look at the pic below and what they had done to it. "Unbelievable!"

There was also this pic of the Denver Performing Arts Complex. In looking at this pic below, I would hope that Salt Lake would be very vocal about using someone such as Safdie or Gehry to design a Complex counterpart in Salt Lake City, if they felt it was necessary to even build such a place. What do you guys think?

I came across this great link this morning, and thought a lot of you would enjoy it. It's an historical slide tour of South Temple. Some interesting trivia that I didn't know before, such as So. Temple originally being built on two levels, the north lanes being much higher than the south.

I don't know how that type of building would play downtown. It doesn't look very urban and I think it'd look out of place. For me, I'd rather go the more classical route and build something that's typical of a broadway theatre.

I have actually been to that building. It is a large complex. It has a large area with lawn and a giant human form statue. I would not consider it my first choice when it come to this building. all be it, it was very nice.

Yes, it looks very nice, however, it's not something we should have in the core of our city. It would be ok if it were built outside of downtown, either on the western or southern edge of it, but not right in the center where a broadway style theatre would go. In fact, if the Valley were to get one and it's located in Sandy, I expect it to look like that -- a sprawling facility that takes up a lot of land. But if it goes downtown, I think it needs to be far more traditional.

I very much agree with you guys on the theatre not having that sprawling complex type feel in the core of Downtown. This one in Denver has nine venues within, which is nice. However, I would rather see a cluster of different traditional venues in a relatively concentrated area, rather than all under one giant roof. Another fact is that Downtown Salt Lake already has an enviable array of great performance halls of varying capacity within a very compact area. Each Hall in and of itself is an irreplaceble jewel. Whether it's The Capitol, Abravanel Hall, or the Tabernacle, Assembly Hall, Rose Wagoner, Conference Center etc. And we have the adj. Kingsbury and Pioneer Memorial, which are now TRAX connected. Each of these great venues serves an important niche in its size and draw.

If it were possible to have both our cake and eat it too, I would like a new, but traditional venue to serve the size needed for the touring shows, and also restore the Pantages separately for both smaller shows, and an extremely important and prestigious Sundance Institute Campus and Venue. I could see a very impressive film school also developing around this arts-core in our downtown. The Pantages, The Tribune building etc. could serve as pieces of a very impressive campus. Film, live theatre and Utah are, and have always been a very natural and profitable mix.

I would very much like to see some trees lit up down on main. I belive it would be very attractive if the trees on Main where lit up with x-mas lights, without the colors. Nothing too extravagent.

I wonder if City Creek will be really lit up? I assume it would be some, but how much? That would be a really cool thing to go see if there was a ton of lights

I think that would be a great idea. The miniature white lights can really set a wonderful atmosphere year-round, if they string them thick and intricately. You know, like they do on Temple Square.

So what is happening with the old Daynes building???

The Walker Center sign looks sooooooo awesome all lit up! I've only seen the blue color so far, and its a beautiful color of blue. Can't wait to see the red! The sign puts more life into the Salt Lake skyline, day and night.

West-side residents who can't wait for TRAX to come their way can finally see some progress toward that goal.
Today, construction crews began bringing in heavy-duty equipment that will eventually build the west-side's TRAX line.
Ever since TRAX began in the Salt Lake Valley, it's always been an east-side project, and a lot of people on the west side didn't think it was fair their tax dollars were going toward it.
Today, the west, as far as TRAX is concerned, has won. Construction crews will build Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) headquarters across from West Jordan City Hall.
The line will run from Daybreak in South Jordan, through West Jordan, past Redwood Road, to Gardner Village and eventually connect to the current TRAX Sandy line at 6400 South.
This is a project that has been in the works for years, but now residents can actually see something being done instead of hearing about something being done. Tom Burdett, with West Jordan Community Development, said, "This is big. It provides a whole new dimension for transportation to the west side, West Jordan and the central west side of the valley."
UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter said, "We're excited to be reaching this milestone. We're actually moving onto the site and getting ready to start work. The official groundbreaking will take place in the next couple of months."
There will be 10 stops in all.

This is great news for me since I live out on the west side on redwood.
It's about time! I ride TRAX to the U pretty much every weekday, but I've got to drive 15 minutes just to get to the station. One of the stations on the mid-jordan line is literally a 3 minute walk from my house... so that's pretty exciting.

Interesting little note a co-worker of mine pointed out.

http://www.bestplaces.net/docs/studies/FiscallyFit.aspx

Fiscally Fit Cities Report
State Farm Insurance and BestPlaces have released the Fiscally Fit Cities Report revealing that fewer than half of American households are taking proper steps today to prepare for a secure financial future. The first study of its kind, the report provides a "check-up" of consumer personal financial health, city-by-city.

The report measures citizens in 50 metro areas on total Fiscal Fitness with Salt Lake City topping the list. Fiscal Fitness was defined by investments, quality of life and life insurance coverage. Twenty-seven criteria were analyzed that demonstrate the steps Americans are taking today to prepare for tomorrow.

Top Ten Fiscally Fit Cities
1. Salt Lake City, Utah
2. Portland, Ore.
3. Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Fla.
4. Pittsburgh, Pa.
5. Orlando, Fla.
6. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.
7. Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
8. Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, Wash.
9. Indianapolis, Ind.
10. Phoenix-Mesa, Ariz.

We were driving home on 215 last night, so pretty far from Downtown, and you could see the Walker Center from there. It was great. My five year old asked what it was for, and my wife and I explained it all to him. He thought it was pretty cool.

I think we need more lights in Salt Lake in the winter time. I have a friend from Sri Lanka who was telling me about how much he loved Christmas time there. He said Salt Lake was nothing like the attmosphire there. He said it was all festive with nice spirit in the air that was unlike here.

I find that very ironic.

When I went by there a couple of weeks earlier, they had gutted the whole main floor. It was very interesting to see many of the old materials that had been used over the years and covered up. Parts of the interior had 2 or 3 different layers of fabric on parts of the wall.

On the whole, I agree with that. Salt Lake City is a dark city at night, especially when compared to other western cities that I know about. Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Denver--all are better lit than SLC, which whether downtown or in the suburbs, tends to be darker than it should be. I know you were talking about Christmas lights, but to me it's all symptomatic of the same problem. It's too dark.

At the heart of the trip was a visit to the Mumbai World Trade Center and an agreement signed with the center to take part in the development of the World Trade Center Utah, which is being built now and is scheduled to be completed in 2010.

Gov. Huntsman views the World Trade Center Utah as a focal point of the state’s increasing international scope. “It is a fairly sizable building that will symbolize our commitment to globalization,” he said.
Wow, talk about a day for bad news...

I e-mailed the CEO of the WTCUT today, and got a prompt response.

"Thanks for forwarding the article from the IndUS business journal, which I had not seen before. We did indeed have an outstanding trade mission to India.

I am candidly mystified where that information about our own World Trade Center Utah came from. Maybe in translation, there was some confusion. In truth, World Trade Center Utah is functioning from our interim location at 175 East 400 South as part of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. We would LOVE to be building and moving into a new building so soon, but the reality is that we are still planning on being in this same location for at least the next three years. We have talked to several parties about a potential site, type of building(s) possible, and timing, but there are no specific timelines or locations yet. In the meantime, we work closely with many, many Utah companies in assisting them in their international business, and are pleased by the progress on that front.

THANKS for bringing the article to our attention.
