The Heathman backed out of that project because ZGF wanted them to pick up the added costs to have them on the building. There is a magic number of 22 I believe and when you cross that floor you have to upgrade the seismic infrastructure and I thing ZGF was trying to get the Heathman to pay for it.

I wouldnt be surprised if it was a W. It would be a perfect location for them, plus if this convention center hotel ever happens that will be the "real" Westin for the city......getting a full sized Westin and a W, does that mean we are starting to play with the big cities now?

At the Designs On Portland event last night, Kovel said that it is indeed most likely a hotel project with a limited number of residences, and that the design is finished and they're shopping around for partners.

He also showed a cool rendering (with rooftop deck) of the restaurant/lounge atop the Meier & Frank. That space has great potential.

Interesting info, Thanks!

Did they happen to have other renderings of the Burnside building? From the one rendering we see, the structure has an odd relationship to the street - a somewhat sterile and blank wall on Burnside. My observation could be totally inaccurate, just curious.

No, just that one, unfortunately.

From the distance of that one rendering, it seems difficult to really assess the relationship to the street. Given the couplet plans and existing activity on Burnside, I'd be surprised if they neglected that fundamental aspect of the building.

One other piece of info that may already have been discussed here -- Kovel is half of the development team. The other half is the current landowner. He introduced the rendering by saying that it was an "entrepreneurial" project.

Huh, this doesn't really make any sense. Skylab has scheduled a hearing before the design commission for August 7th in which the building is still 300ft and 27 floors. I certainly hope that this project has not been scaled down to 9 floors. Here's the link...

I like this design quite a lot...maybe even better. Now that the Silverado block is staying, this holds pretty true to the scale of Stark Street. Plus in this economy, we'll be lucky to get this.

Love the design, wish I could better see the surface materials, and am deeply disappointed in the height reduction.

This looks like just the retail and office component of the project. Maybe the condos are deferred to a later date? They could be planning to add those on top after the housing market turns around, while getting the OK for the height and design now.

The facade of the storefront facing Burnside looks like a 1970's dental office.

I have to agree, I wish it was still the 27 story building, but I am guessing the condos got cut out of it with everything going on right now. I still like the design, it is looking a bit more fleshed out now, I am still interested in what the materials will be because that is an important piece to a good design. From the looks of it, it will be a concrete construction. A great example of what kind of building this will be like is the Bside6. Actually this type of building I would love to see more of throughout the city.

weird. those links are totally contradictory. dougall's does say a 55,000 s.f. 8-story office building.

The design works on a tall building, the conceptual rendering of 9 floors looks horrific. Shelve the design Skylab and build it to full height in the future somewhere else. Or just reopen the Eagle building until the full project can be built...

I don't like it.

I agree with you mark. I would rather have this shelved or postponed until the market picks up again than have it be what its turned in to.

I don't agree at all. I think it is a very cool building and considering the quality of their work, I think it will be executed well. I also believe the open 1st/2nd floor plan, will help enliven that intersection. I'm disappointed that it isn't going to be the full 300'. Obviously the condo market sucks, but what about apartments.

I think sapping culture from a neighborhood and backing out on promises to make a lasting impression on the city is the highest of offenses to urban form and function.

Saying that this project will "help enliven" an intersection that had no problems beforehand is so aggravatingly condescending that I'm having trouble understanding why anyone would make such a suggestion.

The Eagle went to capacity many times a month, Everyday Music has a constant crowd until the wee hours, Ringler's Annex packs'em in and the Crystal Ballroom's steady stream of people mill about on the corner right there all the time.

Mark, unfortunately the Eagle (or any similar establishment) will not open at that location again. Ever. The location is not structurally sound and while it was endearing to us regulars, there's no way a new owner would step into that.

The new Eagle doesn't have quite the power that location had and it makes me sad that we got such an awful bait-and-switch from more snotty "fabricate a scene" developers.

It took me a long time to admit it, but I hate Skylab.

And I'm actually very sad that the Portland that welcomed me is being shuttered faster and faster as each day goes by.

ETA: Can anyone tell I'm f*cking pissed now? I actually had to step out of the office for a few minutes.
