That's right I remember that now.
"Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center" is just too long of a name. They should of named it..

1. "Salt Palace"
or
2. "Calvin L. Rampton Convention Center"

No one is going to remember "Calvin L. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center" People are still going to just call it "Salt Palace"

what is happening in Utah with these lawsuits that are being brought against the state? Someone here in boise was telling me that many retail outlets are taking the government to court because they falsified median household incomes or something... had the retail businesses known they wouldn't have opened shop in utah... these are the high end shops... does anyone know anything about that and what's happening?

That's ridiculous! The median income level is skewed anyway because of the very young population here. There are plenty "well to do" people here that can support these businesses. If they're not doing as well on sales as they thought they would do, it's probably because of the location in which they chose to open up shop.

hmmm.. I don't know much about it was wondering if anyone else knew more.. I know that younger populations factor into that and it's taken into consideration, but the guy I was talking to that lives down there said they actually fudged the numbers all-together...
Many high end retail stores only open shop in area's that have a medium household income above a certain level... I don't know if it was in regards to utah as a whole.. or if they skewed the numbers in certain locations like you say... but nonetheless he said there's a bunch of lawsuits about it...

That's weird I haven't heard a thing about it. While high end retailers do depend on those statistics when determining if they should open a store, I would venture to guess that most of these retailers have entire departments dedicated to market research. If a retailer goes into a market based strictly on what the local municipality states as median income that is their own DAMN fault.

Hey high end retailer have you heard of census.gov?

I'm upset about the trees too. The team over this project insisted that those trees were really old and getting diseased, and said they had to go. The residents spoke up and said no way to cutting them down. So the planners compromised and agreed to phase out the 'sick' trees over the next few years, but then went ahead and just cut them all down anyway!
I honestly suspect that the city council was telling the residents one thing and the contractor something else. They have never been supportive of the park upgrades, and they've said that they have no plans at this time to put any more funds toward future improvements. So I'm pretty sure they decided to do all the cutting all at once because it would be cheapest and they wouldn't have to come back to Pioneer park later--except when they need a fix..
In the end I think they cut down a total of 16-18 trees or something like that.. and they will be planting over 60.. so that's good, but it's going to take decades for them to mature. sigh

Top modeling agency will become neighbor to South Salt Lake 'urban village'

http://www.sltrib.com/ci_8631426

Developer Steve Aste announced today that Elite Model Management - the talent agency featured on the TV hit "America's Next Top Model" - is opening a Utah office next to his planned, $500 million Market Station development near 2100 South and Main Street.

Demolition began this month on the 18-acre site, which by 2015 is expected to sprout 850 condos, 85,000 square feet of shops and 250,000 square feet of offices. When complete, the project will reshape the city's skyline with a 27-story building, rivaling the height of downtown towers.

see now why don't the Plastic's in Sandy try to steal this one? It seems to be just the kind of thing they're looking for.

"Aste, development director for Utopia Station Development Corp., is planning a groundbreaking in May that would coincide with the grand opening of Elite Model Management's new office - a joint venture with Pulse Model Management. The talent powerhouses, he said, plan to transform a portion of Main Street during the event into a high fashion runway - complete with some of Elite's world-famous models."

Ok so groundbreaking in May then. Not long.

Interesting, Elite is a prestigious agency, at the very top of it's game and very well run. Probably, the hottest women in New York, especially the Russians.

Salt Lake County surpasses the 1 million mark

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695263110,00.html

Interesting article, but who knows what the accurate population total is! According to quite a number of bureau's and organizations, the total's were above these quite some time ago. Utah Valley was put at 510,000 about a year ago, and Salt Lake at over a million before that.

Elite, which has represented superstars such as Cameron Diaz, Tyra Banks, Uma Thurman and Naomi Campbell, currently has United States offices only in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and Atlanta

That really puts Salt Lake in some good company. Even though the office is in S. Salt Lake, we all know that the company will just call it the Salt Lake City office. Mad Props to us for having so many Beautiful women in our city and state.

I could image a two tower hotel (blue outline) 1000 rooms, including a new theater. The Hotel lobby and entrance could be on either 100 S or on W. Temple and the Theater and its entrance could be on the other street, with a third mixed use office/housing or just housing tower in the green outline. The new hotel, theater and residential or commercial combined with the existing Capital and restored Pantages (film) would really fill in some gaps in Downtown, including; Convention Center Hotel, Broadway Style Theater, a thriving arts district core, and some gaps in the skyline.

Sorry the quality isn't as good as Urbanboys.
I really like your ideas on the location for the new theatre Future Mayor. I can't wait to hear some more definitives on this. I especially like the voiced support by Beattie for a tower to be included. I think it is only natural that a tower of say condo/hotel, mixed-use should be included. I would like to see a Four Seasons or equivalent. An upscale mix is important for this type of project. Also, if any have their doubts about a Four Seasons, remember that Downtown Salt Lake has a much larger, well-heeled tourist and convention pull than most downtowns. A Four Season's caliber tower would also help to cement the near-future downtown move of a Sak's and Neiman's.

A Four Seasons Hotel would work well in the location I designated for a Convention Hotel! and If it were tall enough, it could fill part of the gap in our skyline.
The block behind the Salt Palace seems pretty central to the current spread of activities.

Urbanboy, I also wondered about a Four Seasons as a Convention Hotel. However, I like where you placed the convention hotel much better as a part of Japantown. Also, typically Four Seasons tends to be very exclusive and more of a boutique situation, and would not occupy enough rooms at a rate that would be attractive as a major convention hotel,"say like a Hyatt." Notice how Denver's Four Seasons under construction, is a mixed use residential. A Boutique Hotel with upscale Residential, on top of or adj. to a major theatre, and next to CCC would be an outstanding mix for selling to the 'Four Season's suits'.

Again, I can't stress enough how much I like your Convention Hotel, (1200 plus rooms) as an anchor of Japantown. I think the Convention Hotel could carry a very elegant and authentic Japanese theme. Asian business and Asian tourists are going to be playing a huge role in The Wasatch Future.

Am I the only one who thinks the parking structure/office on the corner of 200 S and West Temple, across from the Salt Palace, would be the best location for a convention hotel? I've noticed, in everyone's drawings of what the area should be, people leave that ugly thing in there. Why? I bet it's possible they could demolish it, right?

You know what you're right, that would be the IDEAL location in my opinion also. I had once mentioned that they should remove it and could put the new theater there. That location would be in the heart of the the arts district, close to CCC and near two major entrances to to the Salt Palace. While I think UrbanBoys location in Japan town is a decent one, the only issue I see with that location is that it is sort of on the backside of the center and there is nearly a block to walk in every location to access an entrance.
